I'm 25. I feel responsible, but not grown-up. Probably won't until I have kids of my own.

37, no not really. I feel like I have grown-up responsibilities and generally stick to them but I usually don't act like one.

27, and no

Still stay out at shows / bars during the week till 1 a few times a month, ignoring that I have to wake up at 5:30. Still will drive to NY Fri afternoon on a whim. Can pack everything I need into my car tomorrow and hit the road if it was needed

Oh... Oh... me please...

It's funny people keep mentioning ice cream. We have free i-c at work the other day and watching everyone go and pick theirs up--in their suits and etc.---really made me think how a lot of us are just still big kids. (Mind you I feel that way about myself quite often...hence this thread)

I went with maybe because on one hand I'm engaged, but on the other hand I have no semblence of a career path and there's no munchkins running around my house...so kinda is the best answer

Yeah, I do. Aside from my living situation as it stands right now, I'm stable and can handle anything thrown at me with grace and stability and I have confidence saying that.

really? how so?

I guess what I was getting at with this is just that I feel that myself and a lot of the people close to me are kind of in an interesting in-between stage.

I don't really think it's either good or bad.

I just find I still have a lot of the same "goals" as I did when I was a kid: I really want to just stay home and play (i.e. work on art and music). I'm still pretty damn idealistic, etc.

Of course it's all subjective. In my case, when I say I don't feel like an adult, I'm not talking about staying up every night getting drunk and missing work or something. I go to bed much earlier than I used to and do "adult" things like eat well & exercise... whatever... but I hardly have any friends who are married with kids or living in the suburbs---i.e. doing stereotypically "adult" things (not that these things necessarily make you an adult or limit your youthfulness in any way).

I think the whole concept of "adult" is open for debate. I strongly believe someone can be responsible and mature without surrendering their youthfulness and exuberance, etc. (I guess I'm partly curious too about people who are married and maybe with kids but who manage to stay connected to their youthful ways, interests, etc.)

I was just curious how other people see themselves (especially those who are around 30). Maybe 30 is the new 20 as some people have said.

A good example of what I'm talking about is a phenomena that seems to be growing in our neighbourhood that Senor Six pointed out the other day and aptly called "hipsters with babies".

You know, some guy or gal rockin' their American Apparel/white belt/ratty jeans... whatever, and a carrying a baby.

Heh. No, when I worked at the record shop in our neighbourhood I used to call Saturdays "Dog and baby day". The whole place would be crawling with Moms and Dads and their little ones coming in to buy the latest Bright Eyes record. That or pregnant women picking up some Juana Molina to help them sleep at night...etc. Or "Film Director Dad", wearing a cowboy hat, toting around his toddler.

Physically, I'll be 39 for two more weeks.

Mentally, I'll probably be 14 forever.

1. I regularly stay out to music shows until after 2. On work nights. Peter Pan shit.
2. I am picking out my funeral music.

I am 25. Nearing 26. I say 'maybe' for being a grown-up because:

YES:
- I live by myself (though it's a rented place), and am happy not having roommates to mess up my stuff or get in my way.
- I have really good credit.
- I actually have credit (and a little bit of debt), unlike many of my friends.
- Though I do have a little debt, it's not unreasonable at all. Mostly student loans (about 4K) and a some credit card balances (but not nearly maxed out, and used for reasonable purchases like plane tickets to visit family and a new mattress when the one I'd had since 1982 wasn't cutting it anymore).
- I don't have kids, but I have cats. They eat food. And need to be cleaned up after. And require arrangements for care if I leave town for more than three days. And I'm about to adopt another one (but that's not because I'm grown-up, that's because I'm a sucker).
- I pay bills on time.
- I research stuff a lot before I buy it. Like cell phones (the current search) and natural gas companies.
- I work as much as possible.
- I have a college degree.
- I have finally decided on a career path I would enjoy (though it has nothing to do with said degree, and actually requires me to go back to school).
- My 19-yr-old neighbors are having a party tonight, and though I don't have to get up early at all tomorrow, I'm irritated that I will have to listen to their music and the kids walking by my house and the few that will probably puke in my driveway.

NO:
- My 19-yr-old neighbors are having a party tonight, and they didn't invite me. I like beer.
- Even if I did have to get up in the morning, I'd probably still drink a lot tonight. Currently on my third strong cocktail.
-I am clueless when it comes to guys/dating/relationships/etc. I am probably on the level of most 16-yr-olds in this department.
- I look like I'm 18.
- Though I have a college degree, it's in music. So I am currently a waitress. Until recently I had no idea what I wanted to do, so I've been a waitress for 5 years. At the same diner.
- I have pink hair. Soon to be a different color. And plugs in my ears.
- I don't own a car, and even if I did, I couldn't really drive it at first (though I do have a license- it's just that I learned to drive in a friend's car in a parking lot, then took my driver's test 2 weeks later, passed it, and haven't driven a car since... so I have about 3 weeks of driving experience).
- I don't know what I want in life on a general level.
- I still get really bummed out by stupid shit, and I always thought that part of being an adult was not being bothered by 'little' things. It's a bit of a let-down.

When I was younger I always figured that one day, I'd wake up with this wisdom and knowledge and etc., and that would be the day I was truly a grown-up. I figured all grown-ups one day hit this 'responsibility' mode. I sort of wish this really did happen. However, with finding out that this doesn't happen, it makes me understand my parents so much more, in that they have the same personalities they had before kids and marriage and all that, and makes me understand their actions (especially in my case, where my parents' actions in my young childhood could be considered anything but traditional or even responsible and 'grown-up'; describing my childhood to a friend whose parents were going through a divorce when she was 18 made her cry, and she said she was happy that she had had such a wonderful family life in comparison) so that it is now harder for me to hold their parental shortcomings against them. Becuase now I know they were just being who they'd always been...

edit: spelling. I said I was on my third cocktail... jeez!!
