I know Scofield is included, and that changes things a bit, but Taj will still be way more fun.

So what do i have to do top your Seattle know-it-all?

And tell us about this boy.

You've just made me realize; I live in Vermont. I grew up with stinky hippies and they never lured me to the dark side.

Thanks, e.

Cool. Thanks. I'm feeling better about this.

Besides, it's not the only thing I've got coming up. Ted Leo to look forward to soon. Yeah.

I didn't really notice the hippies, they kind of lose that audience when they play a theatre. I like them, the songs can drag on a bit, but all that organ makes for a good cd to listen to at a coffee house or while you study. They might not be true jazz, but they are definitely tight musicians who bring a good show.

They didn't charge you a bunch of money to go hang out with them either.

How much scratch we talkin here, Stace?

On the one hand, you have great musicians (by some definitions). They're capable of entertaining most folks here except Phil, so they're not gonna be teddible.

BUT, on the other hand you'll be in close, CLOSE proximity to hippies. Lots of hippies. I know, you live around them... This is more like one of them sleeping on your couch. You're probably gonna smell like hippy when you leave, not unlike a Waffle House visit and the smell of hashbrowns.

So if it's a $20 show, then yeah maybe. If they want $30 out of you, then maybe Philly's right, and you should see Taj instead.

Then again... scofield is actually good, as opposed to those three who fake it pretty well.

I know that's a distinction that isn't always easy to make, that's why i'm here to make it for you.

don't listen to phil - he's a cranky old bastard in a 29-year-old's body. i haven't seen them in a few years, but really enjoyed them live - they are a hell of a bunch of good musicians, unless they've caught the suck since then.

They're "jam-band jazz" - less straight-out soloing and more rotating around the groove like Phish and their ilk. If you can handle that, you'll have a good time. They tend to just get up and play - very few breaks in between songs, segueing from one song to another with very long improvs. I take the view that they are only sort-of jazz - they're more rock-oriented, but they've got jazz chops. They just choose to not go that route all the time. I find them a lot more enjoyable on album than live, like most jam-bands. I can only take so much noodlin' around the groove. Get in, get out, get on with it. Leave the soloing to the hardcore jazzers.

I'm nodding in agreement, but i'll go one step further. Most hardcore jazzers need to go back to the original source material and learn how to build a solo. You know, with elements of the melody. So many solos now are watch me play 17 million notes a second that sort of resemble scales, and are in and out of the key and have nothing to do with the song, the composer, the audience, or communication of any kind. It's just masturbation.

There was a time when people danced to jazz, and listened to jazz, really enjoyed jazz, back when players could move people with a melody, whether it was improvised or composed.

Mmmmm, right on the mason-dixon line there. If the dude's cute, or whatever, then yeah fine. I just have a hard time paying to smell hippy.

I'll probably end up going.

What do I do to ward off hippies? Soap-on-a-rope around my neck?

Sweet. With a plan of attack to keep hippies at bay this may be a win-win situation.
