I've cut down dramatically. Used to smoke about 1/2 a pack while out drinking, and the last time I went out I only smoked a single drag. I've been smoking off and on since age 12, and I'm now 26.
It helps if you have a really good reason and no stress in your life. Plus, my girlfriend hates when I smoke, so if I want to "get some" then I have to hold off (this is self-restraint, she would never tell me outright not to smoke). Sure, I get irritable, but the sex cuts that right out.

Quit in '92.

Only times I've smoked since: The day my dad died, the day my brother died, the day my wife nearly died, the day my daughter had to be operated on, the day I got fired for insubordination, the day...I think there's a crutch pattern here.

Been smoking for 15 years and I've never tried to quit. Because I LIKE to smoke. Lately though I rarely have more than 1 or 2 between Sunday and Thursday; Then I knock down 2 or 3 packs on the wknd.

I think its a good first step and I can see for the first time a world in which I DON'T smoke.

Paint will be harder to kick. I NEED it.

Good luck

when my grandmother died i just stopped cold. the last cigarette i smoked was when colin was in town, although i think that i smoked a pack in 6 hours that night so maybe that's still lasting me. smoking here isn't very expensive, there's always a reynolds rep giving out smokes somewhere and a phillip morris guy handing you a lighter.

reading that back, it sounds like hyperbole but that literally happens.

yeah, but I really am going to try not to smoke. if I can get past this weekend, I'm set, and I'm home free. but yeah, i realize that anything can happen once I get boozed.

warn the people you're out with that you're trying to quit and those who have cigarettes not to give you any, even if you beg and squeal like a little girl. while, as a general rule, you beg and squeal like a little girl anyway, they'll promptly ignore you.

I loved being a smoker. If I hadn't been having really big obvious health issues with it I doubt I could have quit. Since I have flimsy lungs, though, it think it was the four go-rounds with bronchitis in one winter that did me in. And a tax hike as well. It just started to seem too miserable. Focus on whatever makes it no fun anymore, really.

One day at a time man. And what Katie said... if it's too much being around your friends that smoke, tell them ahead of time so they're aware.

good luck - smoking killed my grandfather and father so it is well worth the pain to quit (obviously).

Yeah, Ryan - just think how much longer you'll be able to hold your breath when you're exploring coral reefs!
