Yeha, I get discounts as well.

I think independent record stores are feeling the heat because it used to be that their stores were the only place you could buy that vinyl of the new ______ record. Now you can order it cheaper online. I think many of the people who were passionate about records and having physical collections are still shopping, just online.

I buy a ton of my music online, but my city doesn't have any independent record stores. Just the three chain stores and the Future Shop.

If we did have some, I'd certainly rather buy it in-store than online. No shipping fees and instant gratification.

Anyways, how cool would Iron Maiden be without all those Eddie pics?

So, so true. This is the true tragedy. As portable media players get better, please, please let album art COME BACK. The little picture on my ipod does not do it for me.

As for record stores, I think the owner of Criminal records in that article gets it. People don't need record stores for records anymore; you have to make it an event. At least sell me a cool shirt (that means YOU, worthless picked-thru Tower close-out craphole).

A lot of this article seemed to focus on the experience of going to a record store and how that is being lost, but the problem with this article is that it doesn't mention that people are substituting one experience for another.

Obner kills record stores.

I used to feel bad seeing some of my favorite places close, but others...man, good riddance. Covering the walls with posters and blaring the latest import ain't enough. My favorite in Minneapolis (Electirc Fetus) offers frequent free musician/band in-store appearances and sells a broader range of merchandise (books, clothing, hemp messenger bags, candles, incense, etc.) than many of the stores that fell by the wayside. They offer something that you can't get from amazon or e-bay.

the store i went to as a kid is apparently one of the best video game stores in that area. their commercials are now geared more toward gamers than music listeners. they've also had shirts, books, and posters for years, but i'm pretty sure they're making the most money on games these days. i kinda expected them to be out of business, but they've stuck around for a long time.

I've really been neglecting my favourite record store. I guess it's just been too easy to get music online. I walk by there all the time, and say hi to the manager (who I've known for over 10 years) but I don't go in as often as I used to. So today I decided to splurge and spent a bundle, including $65 for the new Tom Waits. I could've saved quite a bit buying from an online store, but my conscience is a little clearer supporting the local guys.
