LA or NYC because more artists stop there than any other cities or New Orleans or Memphis for quality local music and music history.

Yeah, these are the correct answers.

Although, if you want compromise, Chicago might work. You get lots of blues and jazz and the indie rock clubs too. But less of each than the above cities.

I lived in Austin for over a decade, I love the music and almost* everything about Austin. I have been listening to Ian Moore and Soulhat and Poi Dog alot recently, I N E E D an Austin trip, but again...I wanna go someplace I've not yet discovered.
Nashville I don't know so well. It used to be part of my sales territory, so I would go for a couple of days a month on business. It was cool, did the shows that they play on the barges at the end of the club/bar street, felt the music biz in the air, but never got around to much site-seeing.

If you were to come to Montreal, around June is your best bet. Depending on when you're around, you can take part in Suoni per il Popolo (June-long experimental fest), Jazz Fest, MUTEK, and Victoriaville (musique actuelle fest in rural QC). Until then, I'd caution you to stay a while away.

without a doubt new york is full throttle great but chicago has a lot of what ny has to offer only scaled back. it has a much more pleasant, easy going vibe.

i'd choose between those two. it's more a matter of what pace you're looking for.
can i stay at your place while you're gone?

You know, that's what has me leaning in the direction of Chicago. As you know,I live in a small village where everyone knows everyone/ I never wear shoes.... NYC might be too much.

And seriously, I'd be open to some house swapping. It's hot in September/October (I have a/c) but the beach and the reef are perfect and no one is on 'em but you and the cocktail server.

Haven't been all over, but I do like the scene in Chicago, as insular as it is.

That said, the best music club I've ever been to is:
The Blue Note in Columbia, MO

The most physically stunning city I've ever been to in North America is Salt Lake City. Some very cool Obnish reside there, as well. And climate-wise, it's a refreshing change of pace from Belize.

well yeah:
I did a fantastic river trip from Moab to Lake Powell a few years back, and indeed, Salt Lake is breathtaking. I know a lot of people from there who live here on island and I still can see those spectacular mountains and the "American Graffiti" wide avenues. But honestly its not a "city"
now is it?

I'm still leaning toward Chicago, with the alternate being a full blown Europe trip.

Europe problem: airfare is USD5grand...c'mon!!

mid-September - Austin, TX for the Austin City Limits Fest.

Chicago and NYC are both great cities for live music.

Nashville is great for "All things music", but is pretty hit or miss when it comes to bands coming through town.

NYC has CMJ in October or late September.
IMO, you can't go wrong going to ACL or CMJ during either of those months.
