We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank, the first album featuring the Johnny Marr-fortified lineup of Modest Mouse, is set to come out next month, but MP3s have started to make their way around the Web's back alleys. The record's most striking contributions don't come from the former Smiths guitarist, but from Shins lead singer James Mercer; he's on three of Ship's tracks, including "Florida," where Isaac Brock's growly yell gives way to Mercer floating in with a sweet, singsongy chorus:

I hope this grows on me because first listen sounds really cookie-cutter.

I just find it hard to rate albums these days on their own without comparing them to the artist's back catalogue. And I'm sorry but this doesn't come close to Lonesome Crowded, The Moon, or This Is A Long Drive.

This is what Good News SHOULD have been. Very nice with a couple of exceptions.

Damn that dude from the Smiths adds some noice backup vocals. His voice meshes pretty well with Brock's. He can actually hit the highs instead of Brock's whiffing around them stylistically.

That being said, the structures and arrangements aren't too revolutionary. I predict this wearing out quick (unless the lady of the house keeps it on constant rotation, which is a distinct possibility).

I don't know what it is, but this MM is kicking my ass right now. Damn good, and I've never exactly been a MM fan in the past.

Ok this Modest Mouse album. I heard that one track up on ATAD "Dashboard" and i was so shocked that MM could turn into something so horrendous. Tell me that is the worst track on the album. I am a fan of the early stuff, Lonesome Crowded West in particular.

the early stuff is gone for good, so don't expect it. I hated dashboard too; thought it just sounded like more Float On fluff. But within the context of the album it fits a lot better.

Again, Marr adds a lot in the vocals category IMO. Makes me want to seek out his solo/supergroup stuff where he's doing lead vocal duty.

I just i'm assuming that the extra vocals i hear are Marr's. Haven't read anything definitively. Pretty sure though.
