i went the first year....
and i'm really glad i got to experience it...

however, there are way too damn many people there.
and MY BIGGEST BEEF ... wasn't the heat (which was odd considering i am such a WIMP when it comes to the hot summer sun with no a/c) it was that there is too much music going on.

yes, it's true. with 4 stages (and a wide range of love for jam bands....) i ended up having to miss MOST of what i went to see.

(oh, and also the nasty, nasty toilets. the best thing we could've done that year was think ahead to get a hotel room AND set up a campsite so that we had some sort of refuge from the nasty portapotties.)

it just wasn't worth it to me. sign me up for small fests like the gathering of the vibes or strange creek or all good or anything at nelson's ledges.

trey is playing a late night set for whoever was curious about that.

if there was ever a year to go, it was the first one. i missed that, so i'm never going. too big, too "unheady" as stated earlier, and just not a cool thing to do anymore.

10,000 lakes in minnesota would be much more worthy of going to, but still not worth it.

I drove back and forth all weekend. Didn't ever hear from Cotton, and didn't see anyone I knew except the guys in Lake Trout.

Bands I saw:
Mars Volta: they're ok. Lot of formless jams. Kind of boring in spots.
M.Ward: favorite show of the weekend. Jim James and Jenny Lewis sang with on a couple of songs. All around tight and diverse set. Seemed like he was having a lot of fun.
Mouse on Mars: funnest and best surprise of the weekend. First time seeing them live, and I hadn't really kept up with them since Niun Niggung came out in 2000. Electro-IDM-Funk that made me want to check out their recent stuff.
Rilo Kiley: saw them play "Paint's Peeling" and "Portions for Foxes". Good live band. Pretty tight and would've stayed longer had I not had to drive back to Nashville to a friend's *wedding.
* I missed Secret Machines, Black Crowes and RJD2 due to this wedding
Lake Trout - Saw both sets they played yesterday. The first being more traditional, with most of the same songs they've been churning out in their live sets for the past 2.5 years. They do a great cover of "Unsung" by Helmet. The 2nd set on the XM Sonic Stage was more my taste. Kind of a Boom Bip-esque improv/post-rock thing they do every so often. They closed with a cover of "Wave of Mutilation" by Pixies.

Overall, good weekend with M.Ward being the highlight. It rained/drizzled all weekend. It was muddy, smelly and the food sucked. I'm glad I was driving back an forth all weekend, or I would've fucking hated it. Maybe Cotton can speak for that side of the coin.

no, Gener's in rehab.

yeah that was my bad, stu. i had your number on me, but left my phone in the tent. because i was very drunk on top of my usual idiocy. I didn't see any of the bands you mentioned, actaually kinda keeping it kinda brief. Some of the stuff i saw:
-Saul Williams - Might have been the highlight of the week for me if we weren't in such a shitty spot. Saul has totally evolved past the def/last poet thing he was doin for awhile and just outright inherited some sort of Kuti mantle. Seriouly, he was electric, impassionate and outright entertaining. I was so worn out after his show i only stayed for a few minutes of the Mars Volta, who sounded like their record, which i didn't really like.
-Herbie Hancock was pretty fun, but i mean it wasn't blowing me away by any standards. Actually, the most interesting aspect of his set was the inclusion of John Mayer.
-Widesread Panic, The Black Crowes, and The Allman Brothers all sound the exact same to me. not necessarily in a bad way, but definitely not in a good one either. I tried to check out all of their sets but eventualy left for one reason or another. I lasted at the Black Crowes' the longest.
-Ozomatli was surprisingly good until they brought those damned rappers out on stage. i swear they sounded like they were plucked from the talent pool of the closest truckstop on Rt. 24.
-Iron & Wine had like 6 people on stage and electric guitars. and sucked.
The Perceptionists were fucking incredible. I didn't expect that at all, and am not that much a fan of the album, but they were really on. RJD2's set was short but definitely sharp. his DVD player broke on the way to the show (the second time this has happened with me seeing him) but it really didn't slow him down at all. After that I was meaning to head over to see DJ Krush, but we had made our way to like the center of the third row so why the hell not just stay and check out De La Soul, which we did. Also, I was pretty hammered by this point. They were as great as i could've expected them to be, but i still regret not checking out Krush, who i hadn't already seen. A small consolation was when they get all these girls on stage at the end it just turned into the most fucking hilatious thing ever. Really fucked-up hippies acting like they're on The Grind. ugh. One girl was so fucked up she just started masturbating onstage. i don't even know she was aware of it. trust me, it wasn't sexy.
-i tried to check out Toots & the Maytals and Amos Lee on Sunday, but they were boring me and i wanted to get near some pummwling, loudass rock music for awhile. so i took off. i was gonna tell some stories about how dirty in retarded these hippies were, but that always turns into more trouble than it's worth. I did start a photodiary, though, called "hippies and their stupid hats" which i might post later.

Uh oh. Sounds like the band's brown side could be gone for good now.
