jon, what was that japanese trilogy you were telling me about? lady vengeance?

i think he may be taking about chan-wook park's "revenge" trilogy, which is korean. includes sympathy for mr. vengeance, oldboy and sympathy for lady vengeance. imo, the best being oldboy, then mr. vengeance with lady vengeance being the far-lesser of the three.

it never came out in theaters here, so far as I know, but we're going to watch it tonight.

The cyborg movie sounds pretty sweet.

I've been on this huge horror kick lately, and I've never really been into the genre before. From what I've gathered, you're the expert 'round these parts.

I'm down for anything, really. But I especially like gore and zombie movies.

I watched a horror movie with some friends last night that I hadn't seen in a few years called Cemetery Man. It's about a grave digger who lives in a cemetery where the dead come back a week later. He falls in love in love with a woman, she dies and comes back, and things get really strange. The movie is a mix of horror, dark comedy, and just plain weirdness.

I thought The Descent fucking ruled. Best atmosphere in a horror movie since Alien.

I know the difference in the ending, but don't know how to do spoiler tags on this board, so someone tell me -- just change the text color to grey?

28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later were awesome as well. I like the way it was a sequel, and yet they had nothing to do with each other -- you could have watched the second one without it spoiling the first.

I would rate the vengeance trilogy as: Mr., Lady, Oldboy. I don't know why, but I really liked pretty much every scene in Mr., the story, the ending, everything.

I just watched Sublime tonight. Actually pretty good for a horror movie. Fucked me up a little. Not sure I liked the story though, but it was an excellent horror movie, in that it was horrific. And well-made.

There's also a Stephen King-ish import coming called Re-Cycle. Trailer looks awesome: link

Severance was not at all great, btw. They really, really misread the tone in a few parts and try to slip their funny bits into the dire and dreaded slots. Good attempt though, and Laura Harris was in it which I always enjoy.

28 Weeks Later was awful, especially compared to the first one.

I forgot to mention -- I also really liked the first two Saw movies. Saw 3 sucked, however.

So I just found out that Jaume Balaguero has a new movie coming out (overseas) in the fall, called [REC]. There's a teaser trailer here, which reveals juuust enough to get me all excited. It's apparently shot entirely from the first-person perspective of a news crew tagging along with a rescue squad, and looks like it could be going for a 28 Days Later-style concept, though probably on a smaller scale.

Balaguero doesn't necessarily do the best horror flicks (Fragile was fairly meh) but he's always got excellent atmosphere (which Darkness excelled at) and I think his Los Sin Nombre is one of the most criminally underrated thrillers in ages -- and sadly, not one that was treated very well on DVD here in the US, with it's altered color scheme and aspect ratio...

[REC] looks pretty good.

Is Fragile worth hunting down? The other 2 are on Netflix but not that one.

I would list 28 Weeks Later as watchable. It certainly did a great job of looking and feeling like the 28 Days Later. However, the plot and storyline of 28 Days Later was far superior to the sequel. The sequel was just a bunch of violence. There was no real message, IMO, except hopelessness. At least in the original there was a semblance of a hero.

WHATEVER YOU ALL DO, DO NOT WATCH PULSE. EVER! Next to The Hills Have Eyes II (which I saw out of boredom and am sort of ashamed to admit), Pulse is right up there with worst movies ever made.

Oh, and [REC] looks fantastic, at least if it can live up to that preview.

I'll probably still rent Pulse.

And even though I thought Hills Have Eyes 2 was shitty, I'll rent it on dvd again just because it's unrated.

shiv: I don't think Fragile was ever released in the US. Miramax or somebody bought the rights and then buried it. Not really worth the trouble of seeking it out via other routes, IMO.

Pulse really is a piece of shit. Watch the original, Kairo, instead. Actually, just go watch everything Kiyoshi Kurosawa directs, especially the brilliantly unsettling Cure. A top-ten-of-the-90s contender if there ever was one.

yeah you were right about severance, though i thought danny dyer and laura harris were good in it. the director's previous movie, creep, was much better since it didn't go for laughs.

Just finished watching Larry Fessenden's eco-horror flick The Last Winter. Surprisingly good, considering the potentially overbearing and heavy-handed global warming theme, but he makes it work. The whole thing is particularly effective if you're familiar with Fessenden's (underrated) Wendigo from a few years ago, as there are some parallels and full-on connections with it.

Some gore, nothing excessive; it's more a psychological piece with elements of Session 9, the Shining, the Thing, Charisma... Definitely recommended.

I've got Kiyoshi Kurosawa's latest, Retribution (Sakebi) on deck next.

Isolation is the best horror flick I've seen in awhile.
