Yeah, but they are of the same era and are the same general type of music. Also, I'd disagree that Guns N Roses only had one great album. I love both Illusion albums, and the Spaghetti Incident, if nothing else, proves that they had great taste.

And Dalen, you may be the only 35+ year old who still commonly uses "gay" and "fag" as insults. Even the most dimwitted fucks I know stopped that at about 16. It's no surprise you haven't been able to get married despite being 10+ years past the age that most people get around to that.

Just to let ye know what the facts is, Dalen was a married Obner, divorced, then shacked up with a MILF. & he's since gotten her pregnant. Can't recall if she's delivered, yet.

baby is due this June, and i'm buying him a Number Of the Beast onesie. :)

Ditto.
Maiden had 15 years or so of great music, with 10 of meh.
GnR had one great record and has floundered around since.

I just never took Maiden seriously as a group. The dumb cartoons and stage props. They're like a British version of KISS, but you know, more terrible.

this shows me that you really aren't familiar with maiden, or what they're about.

dude, they're nothing like KISS, minus the pyrotechnics.

Maiden are incredibly talented musicians and songwriters, not just in metal. you don't take them serious, but you do take GNR serious? that's laughable DJ.

I'm not saying they sound like KISS at all, but it seemed kind of dumb to me even when I was a teenager. And as for being talented musicians and songwriters, that's not a necessarily going to equal something being great. Evidently Rush is a talented group of musicians, but their songs are fucking awful. I took GnR seriously because it seemed like legitimate rock & roll, like the Dolls, Aerosmith or the Stones, in music and persona or image, for lack of a better term. Iron Maiden has just honestly seemed goofy both in music and image.

Holy shit, I wish I had jumped on this thread sooner.

I finally gave Iron Maiden a chance last year and I ended up with their first 7 or so records...they are fucking incredible.

Also:
GNR is one of the worst fucking bands on the planet
Danny Don't Rapp is a fag

My exposure to Maiden came early. My bro had Run to the Hills on vinyl. I like the melodic-metal spectrum they mine, but I really don't ever need to another Maiden song, and I don't believe I have even heard that one since I was like 10.

Not my cup of tea, as they say.

GnR yes has "only one" awesome album, but how many groups emerge fully formed and unleash a 10 song tour-de-force that is still completely relevant 20 years later?

So, in essence, Maiden = Meh/  GnR = :rawk:

Out of both bands catalogs, I think Appetite for Destruction is the best release, easily.

It is really hard to compare otherwise, since G'n'R stalled after the Illusion records...

Maiden has been so consistently awesome for 25 plus years.

Iron Maiden and KISS have virtually nothing in common. That's absurd!

If you take both Illusion records and took the best 6 tracks from each, I think you'd have a record almost equal to 'Appetite'.

Maiden are better musicians as a whole, although Slash is best guitar player of both bands.
Bruce Dickinson has a much better voice than Axl.

I love both bands dearly.

Appetite is a masterpiece.

If the ORIGINAL lineup ever got back together, I would be all over that. But there isn't a shot in hell about that. What made that first record so great was the Rolling Stones swagger that Izzy brought to the band... and his songwriting. Performace-wise he may have faded a bit into the background, but the band was all about Izzy.

It was obvious when he left because Use Your Illusion was a steaming, bloated pile of crap.

Bring Izzy back and I'd say:
GnR > Maiden

But without Izzy:
Maiden >>> GnR

I don't think DJ was making a statement about the actual music so much as he was both bands had comical images to them that they sold to their fans. I'll admit that even as a 14 year old I didn't buy their image or that they worshipped that devil or what not. I realize that this is more a statement about their image and people's perceived notion of the band.

To me, Guns N Roses was just much more honest (at least around Appetite). What you see is what you get. Maiden was probably just as big of animals as GNR were but that's not what they sold to the public.

I just never was much of a metalhead and at the time 10 minutes epics about demons and heaven and hell didn't really appeal to me. I guess I never gave them another shot.

Also, my 10th grade English teacher played us "Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner" in an attempt to get us to like poetry and school us on Iambic Pentameter or some shit. That pretty much turned me off of them as well.

Outside, of their mascot Eddie which could be thought of as silly or comical, Maiden were basically, a leather pants or jeans, and t-shirt type of metal band....No make-up, silly outfits and relying on theatrics to sell them as KISS did.....

I like every Maiden song I've heard (about three or four of them), but I've never felt the need to assimilate their stuff. I'm if I did I'd love it; it sounds like my thing. That said, I grew up with Appetite and have a strong pro-GnR bias accordingly.

I'm not picking on you TK but that is some straight Spinal Tap stuff. In fact, it is rumored that Sabbath and Maiden were part of the inspiration for the movie.

I think there are two arguments going on here. One side it seems may have not given their actual music a fair shake and the other can't see why others may view them as lampoon-ish.

I don't think there's any question that Iron Maiden was one of the biggest influences on the Spinal Tap movie. I mean, I took Spinal Tap as being Iron Maiden with Led Zeppelin lyrics.
