Dude...come on. This is like top 5 most popular punk albums of all time...no bullshit.

Hell was in both the early line-ups of Television and the Heartbreakers. It would've been interesting to hear either band develop with his input, but then we may have never been introduced to Robert Quine.

Love Comes in Spurts by the original Heartbreakers

Love Comes in Spurts by the Neon Boys (later known as Television)

and, just for fun, Love Comes in Spurts by some mustached losers who didn't have a clue

I'm a fan of this album, but after reading this thread I'd say it's overrated.

no, it's not. It might be one of the 5 most critically revered albums of all time, and I probably wouldn't even give it that. I don't think it'd be in the 25 most popular punk albums of all time.

"Blank Generation" is without question one of the most important songs that shaped early punk, and Hell absolutely had an impact, as did this album. But to call it one of the 5 most popular punk albums of all time is a bit of a stretch.

I'm not even sure it's one of the most 5 revered of '77: Never Mind the Bollocks, Marquee Moon, Clash S/T, Lust for Life, Pink Flag, Rocket to Russia...

I haven't gotten around to this album yet, but I would expect to enjoy it greatly given how I like all the Please Kill Me-era stuff I've subjected myself to.

It is indeed a great album...I didn't discover it until college.

Actually upon reading onwards, I seemed to have given the most lukewarm response. But, yeah who'd have thought this would be the one album that brings the majority together.

Yeah, great album.

I think this one seems to hit the sweet spot where its not too crazy and raw, not too catchy and pop. It's a traditional guitar album, but not too traditional. It may not be too many people's favorite as it walks right down the middle of things, but the more I think about it, the more I can see how it would have universal appeal.

I think it could be near the top of what could be an interesting list of albums that were called punk when they came out, but would be called something else today. Release something like this loose garagey kinda rock album today and call it punk and people would scoff at you. Odd how the definition has shrank to exclude so much of the music that birthed the whole deal in the first place.

Oh, and I think Destiny Street is just about as good. And, Quine is simply an amazing guitar player. I've got a DVD called A Night With Lou Reed where he steals the show with much of his playing.

Punk was short lived so comparing it to other releases of JUST one year isn't really taking a small subset of punk. That said, I like Blank Generation more than all of those other than Marquee Moon and Clash S/T. It probably is top 5 for me or just outside it.

isn't this just semantics though? Are we talking the first wave of punk? I would argue that the genre is definitely still alive (and possible well).

Oh there's punk albums outside the first wave that I like. I wouldn't put anything outside of the first wave in the top 5 though, and maybe not even the top 10. And I can't think of a punk album since Rancid's And Out Came the Wolves that I've really liked. I think that album is about 10 years old so I don't know that I'd agree that punk is still alive and well.

There have been other good punk CDs since Out Come The Wolves, such as albums by bands like Burning Brides, The Distillers, Bad Brains, Brand New, etc.

I'd probably call The Thermals punk. I can't remember what Fugazi is anymore. RFTC I'd feel comfortable calling punk. Depending on who you ask, there's a shitload of bands on MTV that are punk. I can't listen to that Against Me! record long enough to say it is or it isn't.

I'd probably put an X album in the top 10. and a Minutemen album. and maybe Damaged.

yeah some of those albums are punk. I don't dislike some of them (RFTC, Burning Brides) but I wouldnt say i really like any of them. I guess I like Tora Tora Torrance but I don't know that I'd say I really like them them if you get the distinction.

I love Double Nickels and yeah that belongs in the top ten but that's probably it for me.
