Just had to fill up my wife's car at the same Sam's Club. Still $3.78/gal but the lines were long and the staff more plentiful than yesterday. They pretty much said they're more or less waiting for the pumps to run dry. They weren't sure when the next shipment was coming.

I saw three stations with gas on my ride from work to home in my wife's car and all three were a madhouse. $3.78, $3.98, $4.01.

I had only went half-tank on mine since my work isn't far away and I don't NEED to drive anywhere beside work. My wife needed a full tank since she's scheduled to be all over the county for the next week.

So for you older folks...was this what the 70's looked like?

The 70's gas crisis was born out of embargoes and gas rationing and was nationwide.

This "crisis" was born out of a culture of fear that creates a reactionary public who are stupid and selfish. Once again, why does the South have to keep making itself look like the backwoods idiocracy that outsiders think it is?

Is the evidence of this alleged hoarding anecdotal or do you have hard evidence to back it up? Because everything I'm reading/hearing about the shortage in Atlanta focuses on a combination of diminshed output from the Gulf and the transition from "summer gas" to "winter gas". (metro atlanta is required by the EPA to use a certain blend of gas during the summer because of failing air quality standards)

hoarding does seem far fetched. where would these people store all this excess gas? the bathtub? the swimming pool?

Stu would have you believe that that everybody in the South has a tanker truck parked behind their trailer and mason jars full of gas instead of books on their bookshelves.

Its a temporary supply problem to one part of the country not the end of the fucking world

I should clarify and revise "hording" to mean: filling up your tank when it's not necessary / taking all of the gas for youself.

Here's AP coverage of the shortage

this is not hoarding. trucks just quit coming the day before ike hit. gas stations had covers on their pumps a full 24 hours prior to that. the few stations that had gas were gouging (i saw between 3.99 and 4.79) and now its become an issue, where as soon as anyone sees anyone at a gas station, a line begins forming 30 cars deep.

im firmly convinced that this is and always has been a supply issue rather than a demand one.

jesus, thanks, I wish you lived closer...lol...luckily the bus comes across the street and takes 5 minutes to get to the train station.

yeah, I went everywhere I could think of within a 15 mile radius...I had half a quarter tank left and now the light is on and I'm fucked until this gets fixed in the area.

Charlotte's been affected pretty badly. Half the stations are out of gas and whenever they do get gas, there are lines until they run out. I've got about 60 miles till empty so hopefully that'll last me for a few days until there is some relief.

ATL still dry?

More mob/herd mentality evidence to back up my point about this being panic/fear/greed driven. The same studies can be applied to the gas shortage.
