hip hop at a festival isn't so bad...I caught Gza with Slick Rick last year and they were great. Sage Francis shows are pretty fun too.

on the other hand...
Kool Keith...Awful.
Aesop...awful
Lyrics Born...awful

no, it was just gza doing the liquid swords album but i got way too drunk beforehand and they had the same dj playing for almost 2 hours before gza finally came out. the highlight of the night was sneaking onto gza's tour bus and stealing the almost empty bottle of finlandia.

That's funny because when I went to see Ghostface I also got way too (blackout) drunk before the show and apparently tried to sneak onto their bus to find weed/someone to smoke with.

i was impressed with the professionalism of the Wu tang clan at their last show here, but meth wasn't with them. I was also impressed that the grown ups could sit upstairs at the bar and watch the opening act on closed circuit tv as everyone panicked and ran downstairs.

I saw GZA when he was here (it was for work) and couldn't have been more underwhelmed.
Then I saw Q-Tip two weeks ago and it might rank as the best show I've seen this year, and I've seen a bunch.

There's a pretty easy dicotomy.
Good-great hip hop shows I've seen: Jurassic 5, Blackalicious (and the extended Quannum collective), PE, The Coup, Q-Tip
Shitty: anything Wu-Tang related, Lil Wayne (twice), East Side Boyz

i will add that the ghostface show i saw a year or two ago was really fun, even though he showed up late.

You lost my interest when you said, "are they so awesome it's worth going sober by yourself to see?" If you have to be drunk / stoned to see an artist, they're not worth seeing.

so the Wu Tang Clan will be in town on the 28th. We're saying they're not worth it?

It's not about the show, it's about talking about it with friends and on message boards.

I mean their live shows are terrible...

Kool Keith was a HUGE disappointment...basically just did hype man bullshit for an hour with a few snippets of his songs in between.

That said, I would love to see Public Enemy.

jesus that's good.

And Shiv, I bet Oberst would've made you play D&D with him as punishment. Or maybe have read bad, creepy, intensely personal poetry at you until you broke down.

they put on one of the best shows i've ever been to back in 1990.

i saw them again like 5 or 6 years ago and they mostly did medleys of their greatest hits along with some newer stuff. it was a little disappointing but i still had fun. it was back when flav was in jail and they'd just brought griff back.

I think seeing PE now would just really, really depress me.

Because Flav's stage antics were intolerable enough before he started banging strippers on basic cable.
