OH...if it's only drinking and just snacks rather than more of a focus on eating...side by side in a booth may be appropriate. Once drunk, it's fun to be sitting side by side so we have the same view of people to point and laugh at in addition to the drunken feeling up under the table.

good point here. the "foot in crotch" is tough to do sitting side by side.

I took the thread to mean a more fine dining type of restaurant, in which case, I sit across from the person.

See? That makes sense. I've never understood why someone would sit side by side when they're the only two, unless we're at a diner, sushi bar or drinking bar.

Kingfish's example of not wanting to face the wall is a good one. There are just some situations where it's actually more comfortable and perfectly natural, and others where it isn't.

I don't have any hard and fast rules about this sort of shit. Sometimes we sit side-by-side, sometimes across from each other - pretty much depends entirely on the geometry of the room & table.
