OH...if it's only drinking and just snacks rather than more of a focus on eating...side by side in a booth may be appropriate. Once drunk, it's fun to be sitting side by side so we have the same view of people to point and laugh at in addition to the drunken feeling up under the table.

There's still plenty you can do to be affectionate to one another more covertly, which is better for everyone involved.

good point here. the "foot in crotch" is tough to do sitting side by side.

What's really creepy is the couple who has been married so long that they eat an entire meal together in a restaurant and not say a word to each other. Just sit in silence.

this happened to my (then) wife and i a few years ago

we sat adjacent to an older couple who ate in complete stoic silence. then before they left, the lady got up and laid a $20 on our table and said the lord told her to pay for our meal

That $20 obviously came out of the husband's pocket and she did it just to spite him.

This thread reminds me of the Schmoopie episode of Seinfeld.

Also, where the hell are you people eating where sitting across from each other isn't intimate enough?

Fair enough. Next time I'm in a mead hall I'll sit next to her.

I took the thread to mean a more fine dining type of restaurant, in which case, I sit across from the person.

If you people feel the need to sit next to each other at Applebee's and feed each other cheese sticks and potato skins then by all means, knock yourself out.

See? That makes sense. I've never understood why someone would sit side by side when they're the only two, unless we're at a diner, sushi bar or drinking bar.

Kingfish's example of not wanting to face the wall is a good one. There are just some situations where it's actually more comfortable and perfectly natural, and others where it isn't.

I don't have any hard and fast rules about this sort of shit. Sometimes we sit side-by-side, sometimes across from each other - pretty much depends entirely on the geometry of the room & table.

I'm married. We sit across from each other like normal people, unless in a group.

Just keep acting normal Rodney, and no one will ever find out. They'll never know your secrets. If you just. act. normal. Do things the way they're supposed to be done. Always. And no one will find out.

Hopefully.

I love how the board lines can be drawn over something as stupid as where you sit with your spouse.
