John, not even close. Voice quality, singing, songwriting, worldview, intelligence.

But Paul was the first time I undertsood I had ... an expansive... sexual appetite. Seeing him lying on the floor in front on me face down moaning with pleasure and pain, well you can imagine...

And Paul would be remembered better had he not lived after 1976.

the rest of your post is too easy

but I could argue that John would look much worse had he not taken so much time off or met Yoko.

It also wasn't until 65' that McCartney started dropping his over-sentimental crap into Beatles canon with the godawful Michelle.

You really might wanna check out that book I'm reading, The Beatles In America. Their formative years, the launch to mega success, and I think it ends with them going pure-studio. I'm a little over halfway through, and it's a got a ton to say about your post above. Shit I'll mail it to you when I'm done if you want it (no idea when you'd find time to read it but that's your row to hoe).

Fwiw, they were a real live solid "team" in just about every sense of the word through 66 at least, so far in the book. They got pissed at the US side of the label for shuffling what songs were released here on Revolver because it left John with only 2 songs, and the way they intended it was to be totally equal amongst the 4. And that whole album took each song and attributed it to a Lead Singer for the first time, with each person taking turns. The whole thing was done apparently with them still being a tight unit, them vs. everybody. Fighting didn't start til later. Or, in other words, Paul putting goopy sugary songs into the mix didn't coincide with disagreements.

Sounds cool Kyle. I'm going to check it out this summer when reading may be possible.

This sounds pretty spot on, though my knowledge of pre-1965 Beatles is terrible compared to their later years, which probably skews my opinion more than I'd admit.

Pre-65 was a helluva lot of covers, and the originals pointed maybe most directly at Little Richard. [/2 cent summary]

So "And Your Bird Can Sing" was a dig at Sinatra... I did not know that. Apparently he used the word Bird a ton, as a joke. "Get lots of sleep dickie, it's good for your bird! -Sinatra" and so forth.

Can we at least all agree that "Hey Jude" should never be heard again?

There's worse. (my distaste for The Long And Boring Road is well documented)

Take your hate. Multiply that by 20. That's how I feel about the Long and Winding Road. One of my least if not least favorite songs ever recorded by anyone. I can't even listen to Let It Be in the off chance I won't pay attention and I might accidently hear a note of that song. I'm almost mad that you posted about it because it made me hear the notes in my head.

I had this running joke (with myself...sigh) where everytime that song would come on in the car on cd or on the radio, I'd sing along "The looong and winding CLICK!" and either fast forward or change the channel, whatever the case may be.

"the long and winding road" is a little overproduced, but it's a good song.

I like "Hey Jude". I don't listen to it often because of the sheer volume of times I've heard it, but I still listen to it when I'm listening to the anthology and Paul comes in with that intro:

"When I was a robber. in Bahston place..."

or it might be that it was recorded on my birthday.

Anyway, there's plenty of Beatles songs I don't like, namely "Ob-La-Di", "Come Together", and most of the second half of the white album.

Yes! I like Long and Winding Road for the the cheesiest of reasons - there's a long and winding road that leads to my gramma's house :)

I somehow only have Anthology 2 and 3, and the White album on my HD, despite owning all of their albums.

I feel bad for Come Together just being in the same sentence with Ob La Di.

Come Together is a HORRID piece of dogshit - imagine the way you feel about "Long and Winding Road" and multiply it by a Tower 2 Widow's hate for OBL/AL-Qaeada, and you don't APPROACH my hate for Come Together.

One of the worst songs ever written. It's up there with Spandau Ballet's "True" in my pantheon of hatred.

What's the aetiology for the 'Come Together' revulsion?

Also new mix idea: Make a Mix for an Obner That They'll Truly Hate
