I just put on Murdering Oscar and am digging, although frankly it doesn't really sound that much different from his band-work to me.

Sounds like retreads or discards from the last few albums to me. There is a reason that Cooley and Hood are great together -- I think they edit each other better than they can themselves.

This isn't bad, it's also not great or the DBTs.

I definitely like it better than either Isbell solo rec. I think it'll grow on me a bit more, although based on Hood's description of the album I was really expecting something qualitatively different from DBT-style rock.

When reading interviews from Patterson about the last two DBT records, he says he doesn't really talk to Cooley about the songs he writes. I got the impression they work on their own material separately, but Patterson knows what makes a DBT song and what he wants to keep for solo outings.

I take that to mean, he presents a bunch of songs and they choose the ones to use.

Yeah, I think they usually record way more songs than they need for an album, hence solo records and B-sides collections.

I like "Pride of the Yankess" and a couple others but this is pretty mehtacular overall.

Saw Patterson and the Screwtopians last night. Blew the roof off of the Black Cat in DC. Will Johnson was incredible. If I ever make a film with some budget, then I want him to score it. Meticulously strung together songs of emotional disharmony, with a Southern Gothic styling. He also played 2nd guitar in the Screwtopians.

Speaking of which, 3/5 of the Truckers are in the band. Drummer (I always forget his name), John Neff, and of course Patterson.

As with more albums than I care to name, this one needs to be heard live to appreciate it. The songs really feel better in that atmosphere with Patterson hopping around, and the dynamics between band members. Also, Neff--holy crap. I've seen him with the Truckers a few times, but I really appreciated him last night. The guy can shred, which leads me to believe his countless boyhood hours were spent in his bedroom listening to some prog-metal. Even his slide guitar was naturally fantastic.

They ended with a rollicking version of Elton's "All The Girls Love Alice", which was a perfect closer. I was definitely sweating by the end.

Patterson stayed after and met with fans, signed LPs (the inside pic is perfect to sign--Gatefold Cover style), and posed for pics. I asked some girl to take my pic with him, so we'll see if she sends it.

Definitely a fun night, and switched the album from meh+ to thumbs up.

The Rabbit and Mr. Hood

I just noticed, this makes me look incredibly small.

I think that drive from D.C. must've killed them, because their headline set at AthFest was pretty lackluster. Pride of the Yankees was a standout of the show, and probably because it's a melancholy tune.

Will Johnson = meh. Not only does he have that Americana whiskey drinker/smoker voice, but he pretty much mumbles into the mic that is then somehow is mixed to sound like he's singing through a sheet of mud.

I'll always spend the $ on DBT and DBT-related releases. I have yet to watch the DVD, but saw the original ACL broadcast. Good, not great performance. Would've been cool if Isbell showed up for a song or two...

Patterson Hood & Screwtopians on Daytotter

...and hotdamn if they didn't do "All The Girls Love Alice".

Quote:
Patterson's Note:
We went into David Barbe's Chase Park Transduction studio in late June of this year, a couple of days after completing the first leg of our tour and bashed these five songs out live on the floor. Everyone was really connected and playing great off of each other. I wanted to capture what I had been hearing on stage that week and we did so with wild abandon. Everything is slightly fast in the best way imaginable.

I was a dipshit last night and didn't go to their show here in Nashville. I just didn't want to spend the money.

So...DBT is playing a private party at the RNC. Interesting.

http://www.tampabay.com/features/celebrities/tread-lightly-show-respect-when-approaching-celebrities-at-republican/1243619

Can't blame 'em, a gig is a gig. But a lot of the fanbase is screaming like chicken little.

And...Patterson has issued an official statement:

Quote:
Re: DBT Playing Republican Convention: Is This For Real?

Postby mark lynn » Thu Aug 09, 2012 4:42 pm
Passing On From The Man:

Y'ALL,
Just want to set the record straight.
DBT is not playing for the RNC this year or any other year.
I generally never say never, but there, I said it.

We had been offered a show, a well paying show for a private entity that is having an event that is in Tampa and coincides with the RNC.
It is an entity that we have played for before.
We played our usual show (yes, we did play Puttin' People on the Moon with the original Reagan lyric intact) and although I wouldn't say we were beloved, were well received and we felt appreciated. We were never asked to 'tone it down' and certainly would have refused if otherwise.

Frankly, we've always been proud of the diversity of our audience and are thankful for the many Republicans (Independents, Libertarians, Socialists and Democrats) that appreciate our band.
Cooley and I say what we want, no matter who's there, and folks can like us or not.
We are thankful for all of the ones who do (unless they're getting into a fight or being a rude asshole, in which case I'd rather you stay home). We are certainly a very political band but try hard to never grandstand about it. The characters in our songs have all kinds of beliefs, many that are different from our own and we always try to treat our characters and our audience with respect. We are entertainers and take entertaining seriously.

When approached for this current show, we made sure it was understood that we would be playing our show exactly the way we want to play it. (Puttin' People on the Moon would be played with whatever name in the Reagan verse we felt like).

We asked if it were to be publicized or open to the public and were told it would not be. We have recently played Tampa and aren't looking for another local play this soon (we love Tampa and don't want to burn it out). We also didn't want to be viewed as endorsing the Republican Party or their views. Fine for folks who feel that way, but we don't and don't want it to be assumed otherwise.

We were emphatically told that it was a private function, not open to the public and there would be no press coverage. We're not being sneaky, but playing a private function is not the same as having a public face shown hanging out at the RNC. That's not who we are.

Let me put that another way:

We are entertainers and we get paid to entertain people. Sometimes there might be people paying us to entertain that we might not necessarily agree with; but you can entertain people without being perceived as sharing their views. Playing a show during an election cycle for a party we don't endorse and being publicly linked to it implies a sort of endorsement (or possibly worse; indifference). Everyone has lines they draw and that was our thinking in the line we drew.

It has come to my attention that these pre-conditions have not been honored and so we will not be playing this event. We are on hiatus and have payrolls to meet and insurance and rent and babies always need new pairs of shoes, but we will make it work. Our feelings about these things are way too important to us sell it out for the quick buck. Perhaps it's a wakeup call that we were getting too close to that line in the first place.

Anyway, hopefully this clears up where we stand on these things.
Life is full of compromises and we try our best to balance between our ideals and the necessary evils of supporting so many families in this economy. I'll try harder next time.

Love and Respect,
Patterson Hood
Drive-By Truckers

Anyone else getting spammed by the DBT mailing list? It looks like that whenever someone sends an email to them it gets sent to everyone else on the list. Very annoying.

Yes, annoying--but people are making it worse by replying. One of their reps posted on their board that it was an old/outdated list that was supposed to be shut down. They switched servers, someone joined and set off a chain-reaction. Its been deleted, should be no more emails.
