Was Fuckbag in tow?

Just for fun and nostalgia, yours truly onstage at the GA Theater circa 1998:

The Georgia Theatre set to reopen on August 1 with The Glands.

A few weeks back, I toured the under-construction Theatre. It's a completely different beast now. There is a public parking deck attached to the building which takes up an entire city block, a new sound system is being installed, there is a two-tiered balcony with a full bar, but there are no seats, the stage is much deeper which allows "bigger" bands to play the room, there is a roof-top restaurant and bar, there are plenty of restrooms (especially the basement ladies room), and there will be no draught beer. The last part was to finally put to rest the rumors of the Theatre keg lines being dirty, which wasn't the case. It's going to be a really great room, and I can't wait to see a show there.

Speaking of, DBT: August 12 - 13

So is the parking deck for Theater use only or is it being built by Athens-Clarke county?

Place sounds amazing. I'm sure some of the other local venues are like "shit, maybe we should burn our place down?"

Still, I'll be curious to check back in 2 years. I think there will be an early run of great bands coming back to play there but I remember when it burned, they were bringing in the occasional jam band or random indie act but they were going long stretches with just cover bands, movie nights, and local stuff.

Yup. A bunch of friends are going to that. Not sure we're gonna swing that, though I'd really like to be there for that. Its gonna be DBT Athens II (i.e.-crazy times) in 2011.

I was told by a long-time former employee that the lines were dirty, and that they had no regular maintenance / cleaning schedule for them. Also told the kegs were located in the basement, a loooong way from the taps. And the beer (Bass was the best thing they had, and all I ever ordered there) tasted like skunky shit.

Other than the owners telling you it wasn't the case (what else would they say), what makes you so sure?

Could've been that that was an easier way to get people in the drink booze than overpaying some over-hyped band to pull the same 150 people. That's a strategy a lot of college-market venues have to go to, especially if bands only play Atlanta, as promoter and venues there will often prohibit an Athens play.

They actually had them replaced a couple of years ago. They very well could've been dirty during the 90s/early 00s when Duck and Kyle owned it.

Bingo. Damn that was a long time ago. There was one cute bartender there who always smiled when we covered a pixies song.

I'm in pending a possible family friend of femdisco getting married that weekend. Verifying the date tonight.

Pre-show at Trappeze for sure. Hell, even Blue Sky now has 200 craft beers.

I was relieved the few times we played there that they gave us a case or two of Bud cans so we didn't have to drink the draught.

I also got what I can only call "blood poisoning" from a whiskey sour there once.

I'm actually excited for the show in August, and god knows I dont get excited about much.

it's a much more grown-up Georgia Theatre. Safe for 30 - 60 year olds.

Less cum stained/newspaper filled seats and more artisanal cocktail bars I'd presume?

I'm as excited as I can be for a town that died for me when The Roadhouse shutdown, and I band who I like better when there was a different line up ;)

I mean, I pulled the trigger early on tix and everything!

FYI, some NEW SHIT HAS COME TO LIGHT MAN.

Roadhouse didn't die. She just regrouped.

New ownership.

Same smell.

SHE IS ALIVE.

All I remember about that last show there was Rory lying on the ground drinking like a fish back stage trying to nurse his back.

Photos from Mike Lachowski of Athens, some of which are reconstruction of the Ga Theater. Rooftop bar is lookin' good.
