I think Pair of Brown Eyes might be the Pogues best song but I guess i'm not hearing what everyone else hears with "Sally MacLennane".

I think that hearing it live adds a lot to the experience once you go back to the record. Still, a great song.

I just picked those two because most people really like "Pair of Brown Eyes" but, for me, I could've picked any two.

The Pogues never were much of a singles band anyway. Their albums were all over the place from drunken singalongs, to tender ballads, to trad irish folk, to almost celtic punk. This whole album to me encompasses everything great about them. They were smart, funny, drunk, self destructive, poetic, wild, and brilliant. They took a traditional style of music and made it something so much more.

It's cliche, but to me, they were absolutely a cross between a trad irish folk band and The Clash.[/i]

= the format in which I've heard these songs the most. With a good buzz, on a stage, with ringers who actually know how it goes.

(now listening to a live recording of me playing pedal steel on Sally with a band 4 or 5 years ago, just for shits.)

And to be fair...i've been listening to Perfect From Now On for over 10 years and have only listened to the Pogues 4-5 times over the last year. Maybe in a few years things will shape up differently. Seeing BTS live 10+ times probably doesn't help either.

Fair enough. I've never seen BTS live and have seen the Pogues 3 times. Granted, the original band had all but fallen apart by the time I could even drive and I've only been able to see them live again since around '05 or '06.

The communal vibe of their live show is something to experience.

I always find it refreshing when Obner collectively reminds me why it's so worth hating.

What exactly is the problem here? More people like PFNO better than RS&TL?

BTS is typical small stakes, low ambition indie rock that's only ever gonna be appreciated by a small group of people who were a particular age for the five minutes that this sound was considered cool (aka: Obner).

Ok. I wasn't sure what you were getting worked up over.

I'm not sure that i would consider PFNO "small stakes and low ambition". Not many "indie rock" albums feature almost exclusively 6+ minute songs, that many solos, distinct changes within each song, heavy on instrumentation, etc.

Maybe you're thinking of their other albums?

I appreciate that sentiment but i'd say that Rancid has never written a song as good as Fascination Street.

I'm not super into PFNO, but I like Built to Spill well enough. That said RS&L is a better album. And, it's also pretty interesting that it could best Alligator, and lose to this "classic" indie album.

Nope...not necessarily wrong. Prove it.
