Back from a whirlwind 2 shows. Both were decent, but not my faves. Will say though that it was really great to hear the new material first-time live. Bull Black Nova is so good. I thought knowing what the lyrics were about might creep me out, but its still up there as far as Wilco songs go.
Wolf Trap was cool. Never been. Cool, breezy night. Didn't go on until 9pm. Fans were upset because there is an 11pm sound curfew. Played but then left 5-10 minutes before the encore. A lot of people miffed that if the band knew that they were running out of time, why didn't they just keep playing. I do know (thanks Via Chicago) that there were 2-3 more songs on the playlist than they played.
First time as well to Frawley Stadium in Wilmington. Nice ballpark. Seems like it'd be a great place to watch a game. Gates were 5:30. They gave away the tour book to the first 1000 people. Got there really early because it was GA, but probably didn't need to. Most people didn't come until Wilco went on. Crazy. Some fans were upset (again) about the field GA and stands GA. Apparently they sold as many field as they could, then sold stands. Many people got there early only to be turned away from the field. It would've sucked to get there 2 hours early and then that happen.
Setlists were almost identical, other than the fact that they played Hoodoo Voodoo, which they left off @ Wolf Trap. Crowd was more "fratish". Tons of U of D kids. Annoying drunks. Many were friends with the Blue Rocks mascot, which happens to be a giant piece of celery. Therefore, between every song the kids would hold up celery and chant "celery!" over and over. That, and throw strings of celery at people, which got equally as annoying.
Got to say, I was really impressed with Mystic Valley Band. Conor Oberst always was kinda meh to me, but dang, the band was so energetic and "on". He almost reminded me of a young Springsteen. Maybe too far, haha. But you get where I was going with it.
All was not well though in Whoville. We were up front then in the middle of the 4th Wilco song I felt a heavy kinda sagging on my shoulder. I look over and my wife is pale, and looking like she's gonna pass out. I motion the security and he makes a path for us to get out. I carry her to an open area. She wasn't drinking at all, but I guess got overheated. She completely blacked out. Doesn't remember anything until she got into the open. Scary moment. Once she got some air, she felt better, albeit embarrassed and sad that she made me leave our front row spaces. Oh well. Glad she felt better and recovered. Watched the rest of the show from the outskirts--which took away, and then watched encores from up top in stands. Like I said, bummer, but at least Mrs. Rabbit was fine. Also, we've seen them enough that it wasn't like we haven't experience Wilco up close and personal.
One other interesting note--during Spiders, Tweedy came down into the crowd and let a girl strum his guitar during one of the long interludes. Pretty sweet. Oh, and Tweedy and Nels ate some of the celery that was tossed up, and eventually the mascot did, indeed, come out.
