I thought this was going to be about saving up a couple months of paychecks and buying a whole neighborhood in Detroit:

So with hundreds of homes at $300, why is not a no brainer to just buy up 2 or 3 of these and wait out the recession?

I mean, there must be more to it than that right? Otherwise everyone would be doing it. On top of the $300, you'd also have yearly house taxes to pay right? What are the taxes on those things per year down there?

Someone has to have done all the math on these things.

because we'll be able to buy them up at $100 in another month or 2.

Ok, fair enough. But even at $300, it looks like the opportunity of a lifetime.

Let's just SAY they are at $100 right now. What do you do? Would the annual taxes be too much to handle? I have no idea how that stuff works in the states.

If you move into a $100 house, I'm guessing the neighborhood is so dangerous that you won't live to mow the lawn a second time. Either that or the inside of the house needs gutting due to mold, termites, or fire.

Congrats jen!

Since becoming a homeowner years and years ago, I have learned to drywall, run electric wire through new construction as well as through 120 year old lathe & plaster, install copper piping, lay roofing tile, put up outdoor fencing, frame walls, lay carpet, tile floors and walls, and repair old horsehair plaster ceilings.

How easy is the fence building thing? I've purchased the cedar fence boards, bought some 4x4x8 fence posts and some 2x4's and stained all of them. Now I'm at the stage where I have to dig holes for the fence posts. Did you cement them in, or just bury them? Did you build yours from scratch, or was it a pre-made dealy?

Yes, cement the posts in. You really don't need to mix the cement though - dig the hole, place the post, level it roughly using an inch or two of soil to hold it steady. Then pour in a bag of concrete mix, and fill the rest of the hole with sand/soil, making sure you're still vertically level. Unless you live in a very arid environment, the moisture of the surrounding soil will cure the cement around the post.

I was going to make my own fence panels, but after pricing out all the lumber, the pre-made panels were cheaper than scratch-built. I wasn't completely happy with the quality of the pre-made panels (warped pickets, split wood) but they've held up fairly well.
