Kinks, no question.

This comes as no surprise that you would like this "gentle homage to English hamlet life and, by extension, to the innocence and idealisation of past times and people."

Leave him alone, he needs his tea and his Paddington dolly and his marmalade.

I just put this Kinks album on and holy shit, come on people:

"We are the village green preservation society
God save donald duck, vaudeville and variety
We are the desperate dan appreciation society
God save strawberry jam and all the different varieties"

Well, they'll stone ya when you're trying to be so good,
They'll stone ya just a-like they said they would.
They'll stone ya when you're tryin' to go home.
Then they'll stone ya when you're there all alone.
But I would not feel so all alone,
Everybody must get stoned.

You really don't understand all the big words either, do you? I actually thought more of you, Dale. I'm saddened and disappointed.

As for "Rainy Day Women", admittedly that's absolute shit, but it's a single song. The rest of that album is embarrassingly bad but probably goes well when you're prancing around a Renaissance fair.

I can understand (really, I get it) liking The Beatles over the Stones, or certain albums over certain albums or whatever, but The Kinks soft rock period is so fey it makes me want to.....

wait for it....

Put on some tights and booties and play the lyre at my local Ren Fair.

Obviously rock 'n roll music is a serious, manly affair, to be listened to with the straightest of faces while gazing intensely into the bottom of your empty whiskey bottle that has failed to help you forget about the whore who stole all of your money and is still blackmailing you after an all night bender where you wrecked at least 2 cars and probably killed at least 4 people.

The Kinks are for fags. Gay little sissy fags who like art, rainbows, and tea parties and are also at least mildly retarded. Bob Dylan makes smart, serious music for smart, serious people who take life seriously (and are smart). He is the only logical choice for anyone with half a brain and at least a quarter inch of a penis.

Of course any song by even Bob Dylan himself that can't be taken seriously, is absolute garbage, as is the despicable "Rainy Day Women". But we'll forgive him for that due to his otherwise overwhelmingly manly smartness and seriousness. It is also not relevant whether or not anyone considers the album in question, Blonde on Blonde, to be among his best or to be one's "favorite". It only matters that we, as smart, manly men, align ourselves with an artist of a like manner.

Let's never let ourselves become preoccupied with the illusory aspects of rock 'n roll music, such as "melodies", "hooks" or overall "tone" or "sound". What matters is the persona contained within these things, the manly, smart, serious image that we must take upon ourselves in order to be taken seriously as smart, manly men.

I voted for Dylan but to disparage the attraction of the this musical "turn" of the Kinks is weak-minded. This was a time of music when "rock" began to access older "popular idioms" in order to deconstruct the relation of pop music to culture. It was done earlier by the Beatles or Stones (c.f. Ruby Tuesday, 1966), but the Kinks were the masters. In truth, Rainy Day Women was exactly this as well.

Thematically VGPS challenged the doctrine of progress and bemoaned the entropy of the human spirit, and the brutalization of modern (mid-century) coporate-determined life. Not too far off from some central ideas in BOB.

Fuck, plinky plinky sometimes is much more powerful than full-throated bombast. Sometimes less is more. Johnny Thunder.

There's still some life left in albums like Aftermath and even Between the Buttons.

As for The Kinks, give me Muswell or give me BLECH.
