Spoon's pretty much the same deal. Britt Daniel, Jim Eno and a cast of revolving parts. I guess Daniel-Eno are the new Fagen-Becker.

How dare you even mention them in the same sentence...

Why? They are both among the greatest bands ever.

One day you will grow wise to the brilliance of The Dan, grasshopper...

in my opinion, for most cases, if a moniker is required outside a given name, it is a band

hence:

alejandro escovedo = artist

iron and wine = band

Is The Millennium a band? I mean, they at least had the same 5 or 6 guys performing every song, but they never played live, and their songs are also pieced together in the studio, with different members contributing piecemeal. There were no live performances.

I don't really have an answer, but here's a fun fact: my girlfriend worked and is friends with the guitarist from The Millennium at an AIDS awareness non-profit in Portland. She has a signed B&W glossy from his later days in Crabby Appleton.

Even without all the session dudes they hire to gloss up their albums, Steely Dan's songwriting is still vital IMO. The music and lyrics are just really well-written.

edit: I also think a lot of people don't give them a chance because of Fagen's vocals, and I'll bet if I hired a band to do stripped down arrangements with a more appealing singer a lot of haters would take a second listen.

Steely Dan are obviously not a band entity (now) in the same sense as U2, or somebody. I guess I still consider them a band, but I probably refer to them more as a duo, which I suppose makes about as much sense as calling them a band, if not less.

Also...
