I disagree with your assessment of where Rings ranks among their output. This, to me, is where they put it all together and made their best album. It's tripped out, atmospheric, but also direct, hooky, and mongerous. The end of "Receptacle for the Respectable" anyone?? Also, a genuine rock song in the title track.
But, I AM in agreement with your assessment of The Notwist. I really spent time with that record and liked it at the time but I listened to it this past winter and just didn't connect anymore really. Maybe it never did to begin with. That came out back when I'd actually spend time with cd's and not sample everything.
