Melodium: Lullabies for Adults

Folktronica, IDM, whatever you wanna call it. Blend of acoustic and electronic sounds, ultra laid back, sparse. Reminds me of the first Mum album but even more mellow. Really good if you're into this kinda shit.

EDIT: Really digging this. I guess it's classified as "ambient jazz"? Has the elements in it I dig of Miles, Bill Frisell and other modern jazz-influenced musicians who make "moody" records. While it can also fall into background music at times, it has enough going on where it'll eventually catch your attention again within the song.

In case you're interested, you can listen to songs individually at P4K

Lars Gotrich @ NPR Wrote:
Elverum's inspiration for Wind's Poem comes from two strange, seemingly disparate places: David Lynch's television series Twin Peaks and black metal. Both feature otherworldly ambiance and an estrangement from life that's sometimes reaffirming. You can hear the detached noir-lounge of the Twin Peaks soundtrack in the warbled synths that lace the album, but Lynch's abstract cinematography also seems to translate here as shadowy echoes of sound.

Ummm....

I can't say this "sucks" because it's barely audible from minute 2 through minute 44. Quiet/low-fi is a consistent aesthetic of The Microphones output that I've "heard". Unessential listening for me. Some of those Obs who like minimalist/ambient noise records and Phil Elverum may dig it.

Maybe turn up the volume?

It's really not very mimimalist at all compared to a lot of his output. Some of it's pretty loud and noisy, too. Only listened to it twice so far, but I'd say it's really good. And I had totally given up on this guy for the past several years.

Ok, FINALLY listening to this.

IMO, Cooley saves that initially lackluster cover of "Like a Rolling Stone". His delivery is just spot-on.

You've been listening to a lot of jazz lately. Any new favorites?

I decided to throw this one on too. On a whim, I tried to count how man of these RVG remasters I have. I think I'm up to 49.

it's funny, those RVG's are kinda how i've been searching out new things to check out while perusing on amazon. they seem like a good benchmark of a classic album. the only new name that i've found so far is paul chambers. he's new to me, but seems he was a big-time bassist during that period. really digging him though...very up-front bass, lots of soloing...

other than that, just digging deeper into the few names that i already know that i like their style: art blakey, dexter gordon, lee morgan and hank mobley. so many damn albums, but i have yet to find one that disappoints.

any rec's you might have based on what i've listed here? it's a completely overwhelming genre...even just narrowed down to this 10 year period.

i'm thinking of checking out those miles davis quintet albums next: workin', relaxin', cookin' and steamin'
