I expected some good backlash - well done boys.

I don't know if it's still available, but the 10-disc box set of singles is a good buy. Treasure's probably their best album.

My only quibbles are that they got more new agey and less sonically surprising as their albums progressed.

And that Liz had some really unfortunate hairstyles.

Exactly. I actually like Heaven or Las Vegas a lot but that's where they started to really straddle the line between dream pop and new age, and I'm hesitant to recommend it to someone drawn to the Cure-ish qualities in what they have heard of the band's sound. It sounds a hell of a lot like Rick Derris listened to some Head Over Heels snippets.

Four Calendar Cafe is their big "hit" as many people say.

People say that? I would've thought Heaven or Las Vegas. I don't recall hearing anything about FCC since it came out.

It wasn't just the hairstyle.

That's an unfortunate photo. This one's a bit more normal.

She's not hot or anything, but not embarrassing.

that's the Boz Scaggs fronted lineup of the late 60's which is surprisingly good psychedelic rock. Early SMB is pretty damn good. McCartney and Nicky Hopkins play on the third album. I haven't quite figured out when they jumped the shark. I've been afraid to go past the first three but there's a few more albums before you get to any of the GH material.

Didn't we have a whole thread a few years ago about artists whose early, not as well known, work is surprisingly good?

Yeah, if i'd already heard these SMB at the time I would have mentioned them. I'd hoped that thread would go further than it did.

Yeah, people misunderstood and turned it into a list of artists who declined (i.e., every artist).

I hate to de-rail this thread, but here's a link to that thread. Looks like Spade Kitty mentioned SMB on the third page. http://www.obner.org/bb/viewtopic.php?t=36616
