i'm looking for a new phone for miss barker and rogers has these phones on sale right now, each at $29. I know that's a good deal for either (they retail for $599 out of contract) but i can't decide which is the better phone.

The MyTouch/HTC Magic is much more pleasing to the eye and from what I've read has a longer battery life and slightly faster OS, BUT only has a soft keyboard.

The G1/HTC Dream seems to almost be the same phone but does have a slide-out hard keyboard.

Does anyone have either of these/tried them both/heard stuff about them/blah blah blah which one should i get?

i wouldn't get either of these. hold off b/c awesome new phones are set to replace these.

I'm still using this, with technology circa 1998

The Hero looks just like the MyTouch 3G. I think the ones in those videos are older versions that look just like the G1.

I think you are more impressed with Android than the phone. ;)

They have some big differences... I was super close to getting the mytouch before I researched it

http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/08/htc- ... -3g-fight/

The obvious one is that the Hero is multitouch, ie you can zoom with your fingers, things like that. The Hero uses the Sense UI as opposed to the myTouch. Hero has a better camera, more internal memory, better battery

http://www.cnet.com/8301-19736_1-10344881-251.html

For me the biggest pluses are the multitouch and Sense UI

The hero does look a bit better, but there is a multi touch app out there for the G1.

Dang, didn't know that

Well, the other plus of Sprint is it is wicked easy to get 25% off your bill. So $53 for unlimited data, text, vs like $85 for an iphone

Mine works fine. Actually, it has been better than most of the other cell phones that I've owned.

I went back to the Iphone 3gs, and have been totally satisfied in NYC and NJ so far.
Battery life could be a bit better, but I'm never far from an outlet to re-charge if need be.

Same here. The only thing even remotely approaching any sort of problem I've ever had with mine is the battery life could be better. Fortunately, a solar charger is about to hit the market, so problem solved!

The degree to which people feel that one of these phones MUST be better than others is interesting. Why does it matter, again?

Really?

I had the iPhone (returned it after a week), was literally sitting in the grandstands of Yankee Stadium, and could not make a call. That was the final straw for me

I agree that debating the merits of each phone is a bit masturbatory. Debating phone plans is more straightforward, and it is easy to see that being on ATT's data plan will cost the average user $200-300 more per year than one of the Android phones on Tmobe or Sprint. It is this point that makes my decision easy

No multitasking (holy shit is this primitive)
No MMS (yikes, even old school Nokia's can do this)
Battery life
The Usage Plans pricing

Exactly.

Smartphones have become the penises of the 21st century.

It seems like certain networks are much stronger in certain locations. AT&T's signal is a blowtorch throughout Dallas, but Sprint is extremely weak around here. It's vice-versa in other cities, I'm sure.

MMS goes live 9/25, but it is definitely laughable that it's taken this long.
