How's that Gidget's Ga Ga record?
The leader, Michael, used to date a friend of mine from high school and is a pretty good guy. I've played with him a couple of times, and he always struck me as a good songwriter, but I've never actually heard any of their records.

It's easily in my top 10 of the year. Sort of a power pop version of the Replacements, although the vocals sound more John Easdale than Paul Westerberg, but that's not a complaint. 18 songs on the album, and they're all keepers.

This frightened me initially but goddamn they managed to pull it off brilliantly.

I could do without
Track 1 - Bionic Beginning
Track 6 - Uh Wuh Oh
Track 11 - Where is My Mind cover

the rest is great. It ended up as #3 in my '06 Shmoo Poll.

But, as to my actual NP for the day:

Roy Orbison: The Soul of Rock and Roll

If you're looking for a Roy Orbison collection and want to go beyond the typical single disc ones that generally do a decent job of collecting his biggest hits on Monument with varying degrees of sound quality (The DCC ones is probably the best in this regard), then this 4 CD collection is an excellent way to go. It gathers all the big hits from his classic period, plus a more generous than usual chunk of early Sun hits, including some unreleased demos. It also gives you a selection of what he recorded in the 70s and 80, including his duet of Crying with KD Lang, tracks off Mystery Girl (his 80s comeback album), and a couple of Traveling Wilburys songs. This is probably the only all-inclusive Roy Orbison collection out there. You need this.

That new Raveonettes is pretty good. But then again, I pretty much like everything they've done.
