The 1980 Soviet games are the equivalent of the 1984 LA Games, they kept Communism going after the Afghanistan failure as the LA Olympics were a feel good moment for Reaganomics and the post Grenada Invasion.

I don't think an Olympics make or break a country either, but like Sarajevo they can be the pinnacle of a country on the verge of a total collapse.
