The song is okay, and I mean that in a good sense. However, it lacks energy to really make it great. It's almost like they're afraid to be sincere.

Pitchfork: And you recorded Astro Coast in your dorm room at the University of Florida?

JPP: Yeah. We went into a studio and recorded some drum and some bass tracks. I was disappointed with the way the engineer was approaching the vocals and guitars, so I kind of took it over. I was living in an off-campus apartment in Boca Raton at Florida Atlantic University, and that's where most of the vocals and guitars and all the overdubs were recorded. It was all recorded on Chinese microphones and a cheap Pro Tools rig.

Surfer Blood made a quite a splash this past week at CMJ. From the very first afternoon at the packed-to-the-rafters Pop Tarts show at Cake Shop, all the way through about a dozen shows in the week, Surfer Blood attracted loads of attention to their infectious garage/surf-rock. On Saturday, they played the very first set of the Showpaper/ToddP/Pitchfork benefit at Market Hotel early in the afternoon. Although their set was merely a tease â€” clocking in at eighteen minutes â€” Surfer Blood performed long enough to substantiate the praise and raise expectations for the January release of their debut album Astro Coast.
