virtualbox kept crashing my computer...at least that's what i think did it.

should i just say fuck it and go ahead and install ubuntu?

You can run it off a live CD without installing it on your computer. That could be kind of slow though, so a better option is to run it off a USB drive. You can use UNetbootin to download and install Ubuntu onto a USB drive (1 GB should be fine), then just restart your computer with the USB drive plugged in.

awesome! gonna do this tonight.

I just did it, and to my shock and amazement, it works! I am actually on the USB-run Ubuntu right now.

I did it too. Worked without a hitch! So easy. Within 20 minutes of learning you could do that, I had Ubuntu up and running perfectly off my USB.
Did you figure out how to do that thing where you spin the desktop around, and it pans out to reveal the desktop is just one side of a cube, where each of the other sides are all a fresh desktop?

This is pretty cool. I saw a guy at work playing around with this a while back.

Of course, like the rest of us, he still has to run Windows because all the Adobe stuff we use.

Haven't used Ubuntu in several months, but If I remember right, its ctrl-alt click on the desktop and drag.

To do the desktop spinny-cube thing, you have to have "Visual Effects" set to "Extra" in System -> Preferences -> Appearance.

From what I understand, you can't run Adobe programs on Linux.

But those aren't essential for a lot of people.

I really, really want Windows 7. XP 64 is almost as bad as Windows 98, IMO.

If you're not in a financial position to purchase the full version of windows 7/Live a life of hacking and pirating:

My friend installed this cracked copy of Windows 7. I wanted to wait for him to do it first to be sure it's safe before I format and install it. He's had it running for 3 weeks now without a problem. It's cracked perfectly and operates like the fully purchased copy (updates via windows update, etc). I'm almost done backing up all my music and pictures and then I'm jumping from Vista to 7. Can't wait. Sick of Vista and hear nothing but great things about 7.

sweet.

So I installed that cracked copy of Windows 7 and it runs great. The loader included registers your copy as a genuine windows copy, and all the windows updates download and install perfectly.

As for the operating system itself. Best windows yet, by FAR. It's like it has taken microsoft 24 years to get to this point, but it seems like they finally got it right. This thing just runs so fast and smooth, and it looks great while doing so. My laptop is about a year and a half old, and came with windows vista. Vista ran "ok" on my laptop, but wasn't very quick and had it's fair share of hangups. It runs 7 two to three times faster. If you currently run vista, then your going to see a huge improvement with 7. It's like i have a brand new laptop again.

Now I just have to finish getting all my music back on here.

No shiv, you just have to search for it. Microsoft is apparently doing everything they can to stop this thing from spreading, so the torrent gets killed every day or so. Search for windows 7 on mininova, and then sort by seeds, it'll be called Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate Retail(Final) x86 (32 bit) and x64 (64 bit) or something close to that.

Umm, no, not if you just do the upgrade. my buddy did the upgrade and he still has everything. I just wanted to do the fresh install cause I've always done it that way. I like a nice clean computer once every couple years.

do you have a usb flash drive? if you're doing a fresh install, put the folder with the loaders/cracks that you get from the torrent onto the usb drive. then you run the middle of the 3 loaders. It brings up a screen with a bunch of computer brands (Dell, HP, Acer, Sony, etc). You click your brand, then click the install button on the bottom of the window. It will make your windows 7 a genuine copy and then restart your computer. To check to see if it worked, go to My Computer and right click to get to system properties. Scroll to the bottom. It should say "windows is activated" and have a product key there and a windows genuine logo. that's it your done.

that was the only part I got stuck on for my install. probably makes little sense right now, but when you get to that part, it should help.

if you are just doing an upgrade install, then you probably won't need the loader files on a usb, cause in theory all your files should still be intact so you'll still have all that shit you got with the torrent data.
