The Criterion sale rules. I am so excited! Y'all should check out the movie "Clean, Shaven" (I think Criterion.com has trailers posted for all of their movies). That is one of the most fucked up movies I've ever seen...I got around 10-15 movies during the last sale, and definitely would love to pick up a lot this time around.. I also have more money now, which is awesome!

I lurk around. I'm not in high school anymore so I'm no longer bored in class and have time to respond.

I ended up picking up the following:

In The Realm of the Senses
Last Year At Marienbad
M
Revanche
The Seventh Seal
The Wages of Fear
Wings of Desire
Vivre Sa Vie

Might pick up a few more, depending on how the rest of my paycheck shakes out over the next few weeks.

No, they are strictly the movies.

Some of them are a steal though, for just the movie. You have to think, how many times are you going to watch or listen to the commentary? Or read the essays?

Oh man. Definitely going to hit this. Been eyeing some of the Criterion blu rays lately and this looks like just the ticket. Hopefully my local Barnes and Noble (which is over 20 minutes away) won't be sold out of the titles I want.

Just buy them online. Free shipping over $25 even for non-members. You can get an additional 10% off if you are a AAA member and enter through the AAA site. There are a lot of other coupons out there too.

I'm waiting for the 20th when the blu-rays of The Red Shoes and Black Narcissus come out since coupons don't apply to pre-orders.

If you dig Michael Powell films, you should really see "Stairway To Heaven/Matter of Life & Death" (US/UK title).

Quote:
Returning to England from a bombing run in May 1945, flyer Peter Carter's plane is damaged and his parachute ripped to shreds. He has his crew bail out safely, but figures it is curtains for himself. He gets on the radio, and talks to June, a young American woman working for the USAAF, and they are quite moved by each other's voices. Then he jumps, preferring this to burning up with his plane. He wakes up in the surf. It was his time to die, but there was a mixup in heaven. They couldn't find him in all that fog. By the time his "Conductor" catches up with him 20 hours later, Peter and June have met and fallen in love. This changes everything, and since it happened through no fault of his own, Peter figures that heaven owes him a second chance. Heaven agrees to a trial to decide his fate.

Definitely one of the most visually beautiful films him and Pressburger made.

I got that a couple years ago when it was finally released in the US to replace my VHS copy. My favorite Powell/Pressburgers are I Know Where I'm Going! and A Canterbury Tale, though.

Right now I'm looking at:

Andrei Rublev
Paths of Glory (BR)
Seventh Seal (BR)

possibly Paris, Texas and Wings of Desire on BR as well. Trying to skim down my collection though.

Is Blu-Ray really worth it? I have so many DVDs and I don't know if now is the time to switch.

For the most part, I'm not re-buying films I already own on DVD. Paris, Texas would be the first I'd re-buy because its probably in my top 5 favorite films, and I could watch it over and over. Plus, the extras and picture/sound upgrade make it very worthwhile imo.

Yea, I more or less drew a line in the sand a year or two back and decided to get whatever future films I wanted on Blu-ray. And the indirect result of that choice was that it made me a little more choosy in what I now purchase since recently released Blu-ray's are in the $30 range. Only the all-time favorites get re-purchased on Blu-ray.

Overall, though, I'd say Blu-ray is only worth getting if you have the equipment to properly take advantage of it - 1080p tv (120 Hz or greater would prob be ideal), a nice home theater setup, and wifi.

yeah you obviously at least need a 1080p tv but it is well worth it. I think dvds are at 480p.

I don't even have great equipment and I can still tell the difference between blu and dvd. Been slowly-but-surely replacing my DVD collection when I find good sales, etc.

Even with a 720p TV you can tell the difference pretty clearly. (Or at least I can) I think Blu-Rays are ultimately a better investment at this point for most people anyway. We'll probably all have 1080p TVs at some point in the near future. Prices only go down on tech stuff like that.
