Dumpjack and I have made an executive decision to A) continue our experiment de fail with the Dead and B) commandeer Rads' thread for our nefarious purposes.

Of course, all are welcome to join in, praise, or less likely in this thread, to denigrate our sartorial musings.

Tomorrow begins anew with Please Please Me, as indicated by Dumpjack's posting of the album.

Here are a few options :

I highly recommend DLing in FLAC and converting. It's very easy.
The Beatles in lossless on a decent to high-end system is the way to go. MP3 will suffice for Ipod & computer.

Anyway, we're starting tomorrow with Please Please Me but are we doing one or two a day? In contrast to the Dead thread, these LPs are a tad shorter in length.

Also in contrast to the Dead thread, each album has - wait for it - DIFFERENT SONGS on it.

There are only 13 albums, plus the two disc Past Masters set, so I'm doing one album a day. Each album should be able to generate considerably more discussion than "I liked it" or "this version is longer".

I'm sure it will because all the super smart people with great taste and those who really love music will be playing along.

Wouldn't mind participating in this myself, since I only know a few Beatles albums in their entirety.

Or maybe, just maybe, it's because the music itself has a little more talent, brains, and cultural importance behind it. Maybe.

I don't really think you can debate cultural impact, but the musicianship thing is probably easily as subjective as any other subject.

Best part about this thread is that Failcliffe consciously avoided The Beatles, and rediscovered them through this process, but after years of consciously avoiding The Dead is wholly unwilling to admit that they might have artistic merit, that people with similar tastes as his could possibly like The Dead, or that listening and critiquing a series of live albums by The Dead is entirely devoid of interest, even as a social experiment.

Way to fail at life, Rads. We applaud you.

And those links that Mcap posted are a little wonky, I'm just going to snag em day by day.

Jesus, I can't believe you spent all that time listening to the Dick's Picks and still haven't HEARD the Dead. They suck, plain and simple. It's not subjective, unless you're also stating that the musicianship behind the Shaggs is subjective. Fucking atrocious, piece of shit band with no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Rather than do two a day and since they are available you might want to listen to the stereo and mono versions of each to add another dimension. Some of the differences are quite distinguishable and worthy of discussion.

ASWAD VOGELENZANG, GLASGOW'S FOREMOST JEWISH BLACK RASTAFARIAN SPIRITUALLY CONFUSED PRIVATE DETECTIVE, REVIEWS 'PLEASE PLEASE ME'.

Worth remembering that this album was mostly recorded in two recording sessions, most of the tracks were put down in less than an hour.

1 'I Saw Here Standing There' : If The Beatles had quit at this point they would still have been better and more important than 99% of all other recording groups. McCartney is often derided as being a bit of a sap but here, as elsewhere, he proves he was a great rock n' roll singer. The energy coming off Ringo's drum kit is amazing. At this point he was probably the single most important component of the group.

2 'Misery' : Essentially a piss take of the teenage heart break song. You can tell by listening to it it was recorded without much care or attention, with George Martin trying hard to add some sonic variation by sticking in piano frills. Yet it all comes together so well it still sounds good 40+ years on, mainly down to the harmonies. The opening of the song goes into your head like a cattle brand.

3 'Anna' : Cover knocked out quickly as filler. Lennon sounds a bit bored singing someone else's song although he peeps up a bit as the song goes on. Nice enough song but lacking passion and involvement, mainly down to the vocal.

4 'Chains' : Another cover knocked out quickly. Harrison vocal doesn't suit the song and the band obviously haven't put much time working out the harmonies. This one sounds more like contemporaries of The Beatles than the band themselves.

5 'Boys' : Now it's Ringo's turn. His wholehearted vocal is matched by the bands playing which is pure sweaty Cavern Club boisterousness. Love the whooping and screaming in the background, they were obviously having fun on this one. If you turn his one up loud and you don't move around you must be dead.

6 'Ask Me Why' : Slightly hokey period piece with a doo-woop influence going on. Like a few others on this album its the vocal harmonies that make it better than it should be.

7 'Please, Please Me' : Lyrically and musically its all sexual frustration but its also the sound of the band literally battling for survival. If this track had failed like 'Love Me Do' the group would have become a tin pan alley band, with no creative control of their own. In that sense this could be the single most important track ever put on tape. Almost everything about it is perfect but McCartney's bass deserves special mention.

8 'Love Me Do' : The first Beatles track recorded in the studio, they sound a little stilted surrounded by men in white coats. Ringo was jettisoned in favour of a session player which may explain why it sounds rather leaden and plodding. The verses are very simplistic which gives you an idea of just how quickly the Beatles learned their craft - to go from this to 'Please, Please Me' in two months is pretty extraordinary.

9 'PS I Love You' : Very much in the style of the day, the style that the Beatles would blow out of the water. There are definite shades of Roy Orbiston here but the dominate group of the time was The Shadows with their rather polite version of rock n' roll and that's what this resembles mostly.

10 'Baby It's You' : Fairly faithful cover of Shirelles track, very much in the girl group style. Builds up nicely thanks to McCartney and Harrison on harmony duties. Unlike some of his other early cover versions, Lennon's vocal is really good on this one, he's really feeling the song.

11 'Do You Want To Know A Secret?' Harrison on vocal duties again. Like 'Ask Me Why' an early sixites pop track in the then style given a sprucing up by the group. Decent enough filler material.

12 'A Taste of Honey' Poor choice of cover by McCartney, the band sounds awkward tackling it. By some way the worst track on the LP with little to recommend it.

13 'There's A Place' Perhaps the best album track and a hint at what they had in store for us. Up to this point the rockers are the best tracks and the slower paced songs are either covers or not so well developed but this is a great track. Haunting, weird, raw and spooky with a sublime chorus and yet there is a real sonic sophistication about it.

14 'Twist and Shout' Famously the last track recorded in the session explaining Lennon's ragged sounding voice and only included as an after thought. It's brilliance is in combining a really great groove with a satyric sexual urge. Probably the song that represents the cultural change better than any. In a different league from the original version which was fun but a little gimmicky. This is the Beatles saying 'now things are going to get serious, this is real and it MEANS something, so watch out'.

Vogelenzangrank - 7.79

1. I Saw Her Standing There

Excellent way to get started. Yes, it's teeny music pap, but there's more to it. I have a hard time putting myself in that time and place and framing this perfectly, so you old fucks will have a leg up there. I actually started listening to the beatles HEAVILY as an elementary school kid. I went 2 years just saving money and buying these albums on tape. So they remind me of that age, not teenage angst. Seems like this would've been incredibly deft and literate for that genre, though ("teen pop"). Great energy, great drum sound, and fucksake it's great to finally hear the bass on this remaster. Also Lennon's guitar somehow escaped me all these years. So tempting to be lazy and file him as "singer" when he was clearly a very good rhythm guitarist. But the award for me on this track goes to Paul. The vocals and the bass on this track are just a clear shot across the bow: The Bar has Been Raised.
