Definitely do the brewery tour. Well, just do the admission into the brewery. For $7 they give you a keeper pint glass and 6 drink tickets good for 8 oz. of beer. If you tip then those 8 oz. pours turn into 16 ozs. Learned that one. Law apparently only allows for 8 oz. but they conveniently "turn their heads".

femdisco and I went to an interactive / beer sampling event at our local "science center" called The Science of Beer

I had some good brew which they had arranged in categories of: Pale Ale, IPA, Porter, Stout, Wheat, Fruit and Ciders. We kept a list of our favorites, but I don't have it on me.

Thought this was going to be better than it was. Tasted like watered down Hornsby's. Gonna stick to Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout.

Flying Rabbit, I just got one of those and a Sammie Stout to make a little Black Velvet on Christmas Day.

I am drinking one of these right now:

Those are great. I love the feel of the bottles as well.

Could've sworn I posted about Rogues' "Santa's Private Reserve" but I don't see it.

Image

Its good. If you like the Rogue brand, you'll dig it. I'm hoping that post-Christmas I'll be able to do a mix n' match on some of the 6ers that were too expensive to try on a whim.

On to this:

Haven't had a coffee stout in probably 10 years. Good, but definitely not an every day beer.

Now this is a real fucking winner. Boulevard Brewing Company's Saison Bottle Conditioned Ale.

It is @ $2 less than Saison DuPont, made by a local brewery-made-good in Kansas, and fucking fantastic.

Image

I have a regular Saison that I wish I had opened first, because this is a real fucking treat.

I had a Beck's NA the other day... Why is it that the US forces are the only ones who aren't allowed to drink...on the plus side, they have cuban cigars at the duty free shop here on KAF

I put my simcard in this new iphone. I don't have an iphone plan. How can I get Safari, Youtube, and Facebook as well as my other applications to work? Calling and Text messaging works, however; the majority of my applications do not work.I just want at least internet and shazam and I should be good.

Stone is my favorite IPA that I can get around here. I wish Russian River distributed the Blind Pig IPA around here other than in kegs..That is probably the best I've ever had.

I enjoy the Bear Republic Racer 5, but I don't like the yeast sediment in the bottle.

Ditto. Bought it for the wife (kinda gluten intolerant, digs cider), and it's ok, but not as good as it costs. Now the most delicious fucking cider I've ever had is this J.K's shit, lemme dig up a pic....

This shit. If you can find it, and you like cider at all, I cannot recommend it enough. It tastes fresh, clean, really deep and dynamic. Like the best apples you've ever had, but with a slight kick. Makes most other ciders taste like beer with fake apple flavoring.

Image

At one store here, it's about $6 a big bottle. At my grocery store, somehow it's $13 a bottle - must be an error, and I always mean to ask them about it but I never do. In NC this weekend, I saw it several places for about $4.50 a bottle. So that's probably about right, and it should be findable wherever you are, looks like they have wide distribution. Everytime I buy one for me, my wife drinks it, which is cool. It means she really likes it.

I've had 2 of their products now, maybe 3, and all were ok but kinda flat and boring. I always get suckered in by the bottle and label, but the stuff in there didn't really excite.

Theory: The English can't make an excellent beer.

Discuss. (ie, what am I forgetting?)

Yup, that's what I got the wife. She said it was awesome.

Tonight I picked up a mixed case of:

Which has the Jomo Lager, The Love, Pale Ale and Amber Ale. No Dark Starr Stout though :(

Also a sixer of this:

Image
which I cannot wait to taste.

And finally, a old stand-by:

I need one of the beer cognescenti here to explain to me what a Belgian-style IPA is.

Technically there's no such thing. The belgians didn't send troops and beer to india. I would imagine it's some mix of IPA hoppiness with belgian style double or triple fermentation probably using beet sugars, all done with belgian yeast for that distinctly belgian flavor. (shrug)

From Beer Advocate (which I definitely rec if you're looking for new beers)

Quote:
Inspired by the American India Pale Ale (IPA) and Double IPA, more and more Belgian brewers are brewing hoppy pale colored ales for the US market (like Chouffe & Urthel), and there's been an increase of Belgian IPAs being brewed by American brewers. Generally, Belgian IPAs are considered too hoppy by Belgian beer drinkers.

Various malts are used, but the beers of the style are finished with Belgian yeast strains (bottle-conditioned) and the hops employed tend to be American. You'll generally find a cleaner bitterness vs. American styles, and a pronounced dry edge (very Belgian), often akin to an IPA crossed with a Belgian Tripel. Alcohol by volume is on the high side. Many examples are quite cloudy, and feature tight lacing, excellent retention, and fantastic billowy heads that mesmerize (thanks, in part, to the hops).

Belgian IPA is still very much a style in development.

I'm always reluctant to buy imports based on the fact that almost all have caked dust despite being sold at the trendy 'beer snob' liquor store.
