Hurt Locker wasn't anything special. I liked it, but it's nothing that should win best picture.

no, it's not the best movie ever. but "nothing special"? this one stuck with me for a long time. that scene with the jack-in-the-box crushed me.

Sorry, I just don't think it's all that great. I keep reading how much depth there was and how subtle and nuanced the characters were, but it was all pretty much one note for me. The scenes where he's trying to diffuse the bombs were intense. His moonlighting as CIA type hunting insurgents was pretty ridiculous. It was fairly generic to me.

Sorry, I just don't think it's all that great. Seems to me that Bigelow is getting the benefit of past work here. i can buy some of this, yes. but bigelow getting the benefit of past work?! this isn't exactly scorsese getting best director for not even his fifth best movie. her resume includes point break, strange days, the weight of water and that one harrison ford movie about the russian submarine. that's not really a murderer's row screaming career achievement award.

You're right. After I posted that, I looked up her movies and they were worst than I initially thought. For some reason I had it in my mind that she did some better stuff.

I know she won't win, but I'm glad Carey Mulligan got an actress nod...loved her in that movie.

Aside from Public Enemies, the only other 2009 movie I've bothered to seek out is Gomorrah....which has been sitting on my desk in an unopened Netflix envelope for 2 weeks.

agreed. the movie itself was ok, rather predictable, etc. but she was excellent and made it a worthwhile view.
