That opening ceremony was exactly what I feared - instead of the Vancouver Olympics it's the Central Canadian Olympics, presenting this city like it's a land of snow, Inuit, wheat, and francophones. Way to FAIL.

Also, the most pathetic music ever. If you didn't see it, this should sum it up: the liveliest moment was delivered by Nelly Furtado and Bryan Adams. The rest of it was the sort of treacly wimp balladry that comparatively makes Peter Cetera sound like he's got hair on his balls.

And kd lang has totally spent the last decade eating doritos on a couch while watching "The L World".

Gotta love Gretzky getting soaked while morons run in front of the truck he's riding in.

I'm not sure what Harry meant by his comment, but I'll be cheering for this guy:

:rawk: I'm in full-on hockey mode. My Caps are doing well (understatement), and the Hershey Bears are sharing the glory in the AHL.

Any other team and 35% of the Bears players would be playing in the NHL. Highest salaries of any AHL team and just unrealistically stacked. They are leading the division that my Norfolk Admirals are in and frankly, they're not even an AHL team. They've got what? 9 regulation losses so far this year? Come on.

They have 80+ points and no one is even close to them in the AHL. Ridiculous.

edit: sorry this isn't olympics related...OHG WEG DIEG ON TEH LUGEG. (Garspeak FAIL)

Yeah, I felt like the Vancouver Olympic Committee lost a lawsuit from the PC Police, Indians and Eskimos.

If you had any heart you'd be out on the street with a video camera, fucking with foreigners.

I'm actually fairly proud of Radcliffe, instead of taking the opportunity to showcase his city as one in the vast Canadian Milieu welcoming the world to his COUNTRY, he is pissed that they decided to highlight the rest of the 626 million sq. mile expanse, and would have preferred a Rich Hope Concert with some Chinese folks cooking salmon, and fucking a killer whale -- just as we all would have expected.

Well, I ain't gonna disparage the Native aspect of the ceremony, because unlike the US, Canadians actually respect their Native peoples. But yes, I get why Rads is pissed that they represented the rest of the country instead of BC in particular, which imho, is the most beautiful part of Canada (yes, I've been to other parts, and ask any Canadian citizen and Vancouver and/or the BC coast is most likely THE vacation destination for the entire country). I really liked the light show at the beginning with the whales breaching. I finished watching the ceremony this morning, so I had the pleasure of fast-forwarding through all the song'n'dance numbers. Felt so bad that poor Wayne had to stand there sweating while the cauldron malfunctioned, and no doubt I chuckled to myself when I saw Steve Nash (short funny story: I saw Steve Nash on a tram at Grouse Mountain last year, and I *didn't* know who he was; needless to say I learned my lesson, and I'll never mistake seeing him again, haha).

Also, why have Gretzky light the cauldron? He's more Californian than Canadian; they should have had Canada's Greatest Living Athlete:

Perhaps he was still nursing that arm injury...

Ha. My comment was as much about the unique qualities of winter sports as it was about the overwhelming whiteness of most of Canada.

Grandparents, aunts, uncles born in Ontario. My last name is Harper (yes, that's right) and there is a Harper who owns an island off Victoria. Yes, large cities are more multi-ethnic than they used to be (especially Van and Tor), but... compared to the rest of the world, Canada is ... white.

Man, I remember when the Olympics were in Atlanta - it was all Bar B Q, rednecks, Civil War re-enactments, and Jesus at the Opening Ceremony, where they had that Uber Famous GEORGIAN Muhammad Ali light the torch...

Because it's all about the host City/Region - Fuck the rest of the country!

The opening ceremonies played entirely into the stereotype of Canada for 99% of the show, then they trotted out some neckbeard slam poet to whine "but we're more than the stereotype". If you don't see the inherent weakness of that presentation then that's not my problem.

the low light of the ceremony. It was someone speaking out loud... but 1) it was not poetry and 2) it made no sense other than a transparent and failed effort to be hip, relevant etc.

Again, I didn't watch a red second of this tripe. I could not possibly be less interested in anything than Opening Ceremonies....of ANYTHING.

Yeah, that guy was essentially apologizing for being nice.

I actually thought the artistic bits were pretty cool but I I did wonder aloud to FemDerris what you and Dump were thinking about all this.

If they going to wheel out Nelly FurGardo, Bryan Adams, KD Lang, and Sarah Mclachlan............and NOT Neil Young then that show deserves any criticism it gets. I mean, dude has been making music for almost 50 years and I'd argue that in some circles he's as important as Gretzky as far as all things Canadian.

You can't tell some piece of the show done to "Heart Of Gold' wouldn't have resonated across cultural boundaries.
