I haven't bought too many 2005 releases, but I so love the Archer Prewitt and Andrew Bird discs. Also, the Frames' Burn the Maps is a '05 release here.

Lazy reviewers reference Rufus Wainwright and Jeff Buckley, but Rufus is more precious, nasal, languid and...well...gay. And Buckley is more studiously melodramatic. Bird's all over the place thematic, genre-wise and emotionally on his various albums, though his vocal timbre has similarities to the Rufus/Drake/Buckley peeps.

I gotta stay Low. Love that one. ...Trail of Dead is growing on me something fierce.

Andrew Bird is pretty ace, too.

the first jaw-droppingly amazing 2005 release for me is: Antony and the Johnsons - I am a Bird Now

kinda makes everything else i've heard this year somehow irrelevant, at least while i'm still in the afterglow of the contact high.

Took me a minute to warm up to the first track. I finally listened to the whole album two nights ago. And then twice since. I kinda agree with you on a lot of levels. Though there has still been some excellent releases.

it took about two listens for this to catch on for me, and it's so freaking good.

other contenders for me are:

hood-outside closer
sam prekop-who's your new professor?

Currently...I'd have to say Low, but M. Ward and Andrew Bird are a close second.

Quite true...The guy on the left is John Vanderslice (who, coincidentaly, has his own new album coming out in August. That's right - I'm hedging my bets a bit)...
Stage right is John Darnielle (aka the mountain goats)...Stage Center is Franklin Bruno (ex-nothing painted blue, JD's partner in The Extra Glenns, and a solo performer in his own right)...

Darn tootin'. I'm feeling both this and your Black Mountain rec. Chars.

Btw, great avatar. I've searched to no avail images of Major Misunderstanding and Spoilt Brat. I would've even settled for a Mr. Logic (He's A Pain In The Arse) avatar had you not found the slags.

I would guess going to Journalism School had something to do with it Ben, then again, it didn't do much for me *shrugs* I guess actually writing might help to.
