cool, archie shepp!

He's my favorite jazz artist and one of my favorite artists of any genre. Those were new purchases/first listens. I'm pretty sure I own more albums by Archie Shepp than any other artist. I'm up to 31 (2 of which are twofers) or 33 by how they were originally released/packaged.

So how did you like those two?

I think it's about time I got some more Archie Shepp stuff, but so far for me nothing has come close to Attica Blues, not even Cry of My People. But Attica Blues does set the bar incredibly high.

I liked them both but especially the Karin Krog collaboration which features more of his regular band from the 70's and also better vocals. I don't know that I'd recommend them to you if you don't even really appreciate Cry of My People that much however. I like all 33 of the Shepp albums I have and love Cry of My People so my saying I like them doesn't tell you much. These are more straight jazz standards pretty well performed with a little bit of Shepp flair for the lack of a better descriptor. I'd certainly put the Krog album in the upper half of the Shepp albums I own and maybe higher than that. It's probably not the next Shepp you should buy though if you are interested in his more avant garde work though.

Today:

Bill Withers - Lean on Me: The Best of Bill Withers
Ronnie Milsap - S/T
Jair Oliveira - 3.1
Jair Oliveira - Outro

OHG, I forgot this one:

Buddy Miles - Booger Bear

Well, I like the music. Lyrically, this is brutal at times. I nearly shut it off at the end of 'One of Us Has to Go', when he made that gunshot sound.

That is admittedly the low point of an otherwise stellar album.
