I think the not bothering many of them is key. In most other parts of the country, this bothers the majority and would cost real votes, not just mildly piss of a small group that's not voting for him anyway.

And, feel free to chastise me for not being from the south and making this assumption. Just when you see southern politicians from the outside, this sort of thing seems much more accepted than it is elsewhere...and also it seems this is a part of the country where this is just the sort of thing republicans have been able to take advantage of to win elections, which does not work so well elsewhere.

I totally agree with you.

But every map I own includes Missouri in the South.

It's kind of borderline around here. Kind of interesting really how you can really find plenty of people around here who do identify a bit southern and others who find it ridiculous. But, considering we hosted Dread Scott and remain one of the most segregated cities in the country, well... Still, I was surprised when I lived in Michigan and the first thing lots of people said when they found out I was from St. Louis was...."weird, you don't seem to have a southern accent."

Home of Jesse James and Mark Twain. Not sure it gets more Southern than those two.

... and southern Illinois... and most of Indiana...and southern and eastern Ohio.... and parts of central Penn... and the borough of Staten Island.... and every east of Sacramento and south of Orange Co.in California.... and pockets of New Hampshire...and eastern Conn.... and South Boston and Dorchester... and Wassila, Alaska.... The "South" Is So Much More than the "south." And of course the racism of the "South" is housed in pockets of the brain (c.f. Implicit Associations Test).

A fucking Men. Overheard on a corner outside a bicycle shop a few days after Teh Election:

"Well, I guess he had to get elected so that someone can kill him, and everyone will think he's some sort of martyr... (eyeroll)"

Yeah, Twain, Jesse James and all that does give the state a southern flavor...but I still contend it is more border state and a mixture than truly a southern state.

And an addendum to Harry's point, I always find it perplexing when someone from northern states flies the confederate flag with no actual southern heritage and still has the nerve to claim it is not racist. Yes, I have actually had this conversation with said people many times. I disagree with the southerners who claim it is not a symbol of racism, but can at least see some argument for southern pride if you're from the south. But, northerners who fly that flag? Fucking gimmie a break you racist piece of shit.

By pockets of NH, you mean "everywhere some liberal Masshole hasn't moved to get away from taxes?"

Of course George Wallace's two largest rallies outside the 13 states of the Old Confed were in? Boston and Milwaukee.

Seems to be most of the state, yeah. They're incredibly libertarian up there. A motorcycling buddy who lives in the woods up there bought 2 ak47's when Clinton passed anti-gun legislation, "just on principle."

Maybe I'm naive, optimistic, or out of touch, but I don't think this kind of overt racism plays in the South either anymore. There's a brand of racism that does still play in the South but I don't think comments like this are really shared by majority of southerners. On the other hand, I don't think it really bothers many of them either.

Maybe I'm just too cynical, but I think they play better with a (A) black president and (B) shitty economy.

But Fu, we're living in days where Col. Reb has been placed by gentle Old Ben, the Louisiana Black Bear. It's a new Old South.
