Drive Angry. there is a vast difference between horrible movies and horrible movies with a smile and wink (sometimes literally). drive angry is definitely the latter. it's directed by the guy who did the my bloody valentine remake in 3d a year or two ago. it stars nicolas cage, william fichtner and amber heard. on the surface, the plot is all about avenging the death of a family member. but this movie brings in an absurd supernatural element, a fascination with muscle cars and sweet violence. it's completely ridiculous. one character's role jumps back and forth between villain and guardian. there are enormous plot holes and continuity errors. have you ever wanted to see charlotte ross naked? i think she wears clothes in one scene. horrible movie, but everybody in it seems to be in on the joke.

I heard about this being released. Nicholas Cage is finally starting to see the potential marketability in being a nut job. I've read a few interviews of late where he's kinda facing the online hecklers head-on. He even talked about the hair issue, and went film-by-film what was a wig and what wasn't.

I still need to see the Bad Lieutenant remak...er, whatever it is.

Anyone see Blue Valentine yet? It's really depressing but Gosling & Williams give amazing performances.

I want to see it but I haven't been in the mood to be depressed.

yeah, i don't think I'm in the right mindset for a depressing relationship movie as I'm just getting over one myself.

I should watch about a boy again as I seem to be sleeping with a pool of divorced single 30 something moms these days

So far in '11 I've watched:

Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work: The material and the subject are strong but fuck, whoever made this needs to consider another career. Not very well made, but Rivers is great.

Julie and Julia: My pick to watch from a pretty slim menu my wife presented me with the other night; I thought I'd hate but I actually really liked it (not a huge stretch though given the starring role that food and cooking play) despite the fact that Amy Adams, wow, she's a pretty fucking terrible actress. Liked Stanley Tucci.

Borrowed "The Town" from a friend. Really, really enjoyed it. Who knew that Affleck would turn into a good director?

I thought the gunfight scenes were really well done when I saw The Town in the theater. The best I can think of since Heat.

I need to check out the extended cut. Was reading about it, and apparently Affleck's initial cut was 4 hours. Then cut down to 2:40. I guess they released that as a SE. The theatrical was the studio-mandated cut of under 2:10.

Yeah, I really want to see Blue Valentine. Fan of Gosling.

Tonight I'm watching Jack Goes Boating and Freakonomics.

As for your comment, I can't even remember the last time I was blown away by a film. It was most likely, There Will Be Blood.

Green Hornet

tons of fun, and I hope it becomes a franchise. very funny if you like Seth Rogen. great action sequences.
of course, the hipsters are ready to end Seth Rogen's 15 minutes of fame, so I expect much hate for this flick.

however, it was real good.

I liked it too. I thought it could have more Julia in it and less Julie. I think Julia Child is a pretty interesting person.

I couldn't make it through this one. Adams' acting and her cloying, uber yuppie fail of a character made me wish Debo would show up and hit her like he hit Felicia, but agree that Streep/Tucci are great.

The Town was almost great, but the narrow escape and the last gun battle sorta took me out of my willful suspension of disbelief zone. Solid B+, and an inevitable great flick to catch on a Saturday night on cable, but misses the pantheon. Blake Lively's tiggies however, are pantheon level in that movie.

I've been curious about the J&J flick but wasn't sure I could cut the whole thing. I did like The Town as well, but found it a shade too long. Loved Pete Postlethwaite's character, especially his "I clipped his balls" speech.

Also ended up watching Wanted, Angelina Jolie as an assassin. Really got my hate going.

Just caught I Love You Phillip Morris...a lot better and more offbeat than I expected, some parts were especially heartbreaking.

I agree with Yuppie Fail Character. I think the real life Julie ended up cheating on her boyfriend.

I didn't like this one either. But unlike all of you, I didn't really love any of the acting.

Streep was fine as Julia Child I guess.

Tucci has been way over the top for me in almost everything I've seen him in recently. Just like Kevin Spacey. Both very good actors that need to tone it down a bit. Maybe it's their director's faults but subtlety has it's virtues.

Amy Adams--yeah, I agree.

Its a shame, I thought Amy Adams showed some promise when Junebug came out...but a string of poor decision dreck has shown that she just wants to be Julia Roberts...

Saw "I Love You Phillip Morris"... very good, better than I expected and yes, heartbreaking at moments. Carrey & McGregor were both very good in their roles.

Saw "Rabbit Hole"... you would think it would be a total downer, and it wasn't anything special narrative, or plot-wise, but some great performances by Kidman, Eckhart, Wiest, Oh, and the young kid (can't remember his name right now) made it hopeful and at times, even uplifting.

Also saw "The Green Hornet"... critics don't really seem to like it, but I really enjoyed it. Didn't need to be in 3-D at all, but it was entertaining and I'm still not growing tired of Rogen's schtick. Christoph Waltz was very good as the villain. And James Franco even shows up unexpectedly at the beginning and has some great lines. Franco is the man.
