well dudes, Fleet Foxes are more of a folk band than anything else.

Not sure how that moves the dad rock meter one way or the other. Dad's don't like folk? I'll have to tell my father-in-law that next time he pulls out the Peter Paul and Mary.

nah, tell your father-in-law to stop being a douche and listen to something interesting.

He's my FIL, not possible.

I should be so lucky. FemDerris' dad has shit like Clay Aiken and SEVERAL Mannhaim Steamroller cd's.

At least her mom likes some good stuff.

He wears sutis everyday but outside of work he favors pastel colored sweaters.

He has a SICK collection of fine whiskey and scotches but prefers pomegranate martinis or apple-tinis.

He's highly successful so I think it's a big case of "I don't give a fuck" at this point.

Believe me, the last time I was in Charlotte I did some damage to his Basil Hayden's and his Macallan's.

Pretty effin hilarious.

http://www.nme.com/reviews/fleet-foxes/12024

It was Conor Kiley of glam-metal reprobates Holy Ghost Revival who gave the world the term ‘fucking canoeing music’ to nail the flaccid faux-outdoorsy sonics of Fleet Foxes. Conor, babes: you wuz right. Fleet Foxes suck. They’re the soy-latte house band of Starbucks.

They peddle the same sort of fake-rustic rootsiness that seems to be colonising our era: all these flatpack off-the-peg dreams of Ruritania that iPad-stashing mid-lifes have taken up as a counterpoint to their rabid technophilia. They lull you in with their flawlessly polished music and hey-nonny-nonny you into a hypnagogic state, with the aim of making the world safe for the bland, the dull and the wi-fi enabled.

‘Helplessness Blues’, then, is pretty much ‘Canoe 2: Return To Lake Flaccid’. ‘Battery Kinzie’ is the frosty choral ‘White Winter Hymnal’ one, ‘Montezuma’ the wending ‘Your Protector’ one, ‘The Plains/Bitter Dancer’ the foresty spooky-wooky one. There can be no doubting that they’ve spent an age adding baubles, fixing things, even, apparently, hauling out the not-even-joking ‘Tibetan singing bowl’ to expand their palate. Robin Pecknold made them scrap one entire album, and only the rest of the band’s refusal stopped him from scrapping this one too.

It feels like the same neurotic perfectionism that makes him question his own talents is what makes him such a bloodless figure. Here is a man who reportedly has no friends outside the band – bar a girlfriend with whom he was splitting up at the time. For a man as ill at ease with emotions as that, dipping into introspection can easily come off as solipsism.

It’s Pecknold’s milksop voice that dominates, to the point that the unwilling will feel like they’re listening to Crosby, Stills, Nash & A Lonely Duck. For a two-second moment – on ‘The Shrine/An Argument’ – he finds a roar behind the check-in desk clerk, and it’s a startling wake-up. Again, there are flashes of lyrical concision that hint at real poetry – like the title track’s much-quoted internal debate between wanting to be unique and wanting to be lost in a greater whole.

But really, despite all the ‘celestial’s and ‘life-affirming’s with which the critics will paper this, the truth is that no-one is ever going to sleep with you because you played them a song that begins with the immortal line: “Ruffled the fur of the collie ’neath the table...”. Canoe dig it? No thanks.

Gavin Haynes

Maybe if this were coming from somewhere other than NME, but they really have no leg to stand on when accusing a band of being "fake" and "safe". What bold, dangerous new music are you offering us as an alternative, NME? They were good enough for them in 2008. I wonder what happened? Not trendy enough for the '11?

I haven't heard this album yet, but I feel like I know what to expect. Pretty folk music. It's pretty easy to paint an ugly caricature of that if you really want to, contrast it to the soulless nature of modern music consumption and the coffee shop stereotypes, etc. and make it seem really disingenuous to make a polished "outdoorsy" record. It isn't witty or insightful in the least. It hates on a perceived stereotype more than the music itself and just parrots things funnier and more clever people were saying nearly a decade ago. "Wi-fi enabled". Ooooooh, you wound me. Maybe Gavin Haynes would like to tell us about his 4G data plan.

Antiquated humor or not, I found the piece amusing. I haven't been exactly low-key in professing my fandom of this band. While perhaps not being apparent to the casual listener, I do feel like the band has progressed from record #1, avoiding any dreaded sophomore slump. That being said, I can see why the writer, perhaps not entirely cleverly, would say some of those things. Ignorant as pundits can be from time to time, he is entitled to his opinion.

Sure, they play slow, somnambulistic music, but they're good.

"L" is for Fleet Foxes Listeners on the OB who died of ennui.

this is one of the things i don't like about the new one. their debut sounded soft and warm and full, but this one sounds like uber-slick ye olde minstrels or monk chants or something like that. i think a few songs will sink in down the line but it does seem like they relied more on the sound than on the songwriting this time around.

No offense, I get the folksiness and harmonizing. I hear skillfulness in there. Its pretty moonlight drive in the mountains stuff. I don't know that anyone needs to own more than one album of this. Its kind of like Enya.

With all of these glowing reviews I guess this is as good a place any to post this.

For any Atlanta folks wanting to go to their show at the Tabernacle, I've got a friend with 2 tickets he needs to sell due to a conflict.

$30 + $12 fees. $42 total. Face value although he might take less. I can ask.

Hit me up if interested.

to me it's their ambient-like unfocused meandering that make them (mostly) listenable to me. Given their precious harmonies if they were "good" pop song writers, with chorus bridge tin pan alley skills, to me they would be heinous treacle.

Now that I've heard the whole thing, it did sound pretty bland and boring on first listen.

Still don't like that review or reviewer. I'm so tired of "music criticism" that's just an attack on perceived stereotypes, either of the people who created the music or of its fans or both. This is music made by ______ for ______. If you can pull something clever or funny out of that, good for you. He didn't.

unless you're sitting on your porch, sipping whisky, enjoying this album and some beautiful sunny weather, you're really missing out on how this album should be enjoyed.

fucking superb release.

I just can't connect with these guys. It must be that I quit drinking whiskey and generally avoid the sun.
