Who's your internet provider and what's your level of service? (dealt with a wireless internet provider who dropped service every 30 minutes on a 6 mbps plan which never exceeded 500 kbps)
What avenue are you trying to download shit from? (some providers block, or limit the bandwidth, on torrents or commonly used download sites)
Are your neighbors, or other in-house devices, on the same signal? (mine's "Donger" and sometimes it interferes with "Beerboobsandfootball" )
Is your network password protected? (duh)
Is your router old and using the G signal? (I think N is the most current for most new comps with wireless and ultimately shouldn't be an issue from my understanding, but the reverse isn't true, ie accessing an N signal from a wireless card for a G signal).
Which encryption, if any at all, is your comp and router using? (some slow significantly. WPA/WPA2 is most sufficient and efficient for most households)
Which firmware you do use to maintain your router? (who the fuck does that?)
I replaced the shipped firmware on my Linksys with Tomato. (scary!)
http://www.polarcloud.com/tomatoLets you personalize your router to an extent beyond my knowledge,
but the default settings get the job done and the basic utilities address most issues from repeated experience (most commonly the interference from someone else on the same frequency, encryption issues and port settings for torrent downloads).
Simply download the compressed file and follow the "read me"'s.
...brainstorming and summarizing issues I've dealt with on my 7 year old Macbook (which still works impeccably, besides a now insufficient amount of hard drive space -- which is addressed by Carbon Copy Cloner which duplicates your internal hard drive to an external hard drive allowing you to free up native space).
I'd like some feedback on my neophyte experiences if anyone has any to offer.
(And since it was referenced, the Airport Base Station is awesome for establishing a wireless sound system to your receiver from your laptop -- which I understand could be done more cheaply in a more complicated fashion. But the moderate price ($90) makes up for the satisfaction of instantaneous downloads that go wirelessly to my big speakers (and you can hack that shit to make any sound, in addition to itunes, ie movies, to be wirelessly broadcast). And if you are without an unsubsidized printing source, you could hook up your printer wirelessly as well!)
Oh yeah. I like the Strokes. But I'm gonna get super drunk and review the new one with a bad attitude.
