invariably i get one nice cocktail with all sorts of organic/local ingredients and spirits from local distilleries and then invariably switch over to jack and coke and drink about 10 of those until i pass out.

The Merchant:

2oz bourbon
splash Grand Marnier
2tsp jalapeno simple syrup
3 mint leaves
10 cilantro leaves
squeeze 1/2 lime
3 dash bitters

Muddle the mint and cilantro with the lime juice, syrup and bitters. Add the bourbon and Grand Marnier. Shake and strain into cocktail glass.

That sounds pretty good. A couple of questions: do you make the jalapeno simple syrup or buy it? if you make it, care to share the recipe? what bitters do you use for this one? just angostura or something special?

I had a drink last week called the tavern on the green which also used cilantro and jalapeno. I'd never seen cilantro in a drink before that.

Yeah, I hadn't either and I love cilantro. This Merchant is great if you're a bourbon fan and like a little spice.

I make the jalapeno simple syrup:

1 cup water
1 cup sugar
3 chopped jalapenos

Bring all to a boil long enough for the sugar to dissolve. Cover, remove from heat and sit 30 min. Strain the peppers out. Then chill. It'll be good for a month in the fridge.

As for the bitters I just have used Angostura.

Also, just realized that I left out 1 ingredient from the recipe: 1/2oz lillet blanc. Fixed the original post.

i had a really great martini with basil and cinnamon, not sure if there were other things going on. I had it in Baltimore at a place that looked kinda cheesy, but their martinis were really fresh and creative and great.

My favorite vodka drink is still my bloody mary. Probably because i can't taste the vodka. Maybe i'll try infusing some vodka. Maybe i'll infuse some vodka with garlic, peppercorns, and habaneros for a bloody mary.

Any other favorite vodka drinks?

FEMGAR still asks for these, and I still make 'em. Can't wait to drink one from the master again.

We used to just lick the tabasco off our hand (or you know, an available bodypart)

and I always liked a cold shot of tequila with a pineapple juice back. Me and our old friend Scotty used to drink enough of those to get ornery quite often back in our school days.

Every winter we like to find a bar that serves Tom and Jerry's . There are dry mixes available, but the best I've had are the ones that are made from scratch..found this recipe, but it can vary some. Some people add cinnamon and cloves.

Ingredients:

1 egg
1/2 oz simple syrup or 1 tsp powdered sugar
1 oz dark rum
1 oz Cognac or brandy
hot milk or hot water
grated nutmeg for garnish

Preparation:

Separate the egg white from the egg yolk and beat them separately.
Fold the beaten eggs together and place into an Irish coffee glass.
Add the sugar or simple syrup, dark rum and brandy.
Fill with hot milk or hot water.
Stir well.
Garnish with grated nutmeg.

Summertime is over, but I do have a favorite summertime cocktail.

Chop watermelon into chunks and remove seeds. Fill blender with the chunks and a handful of ice, pour generous amounts of vodka over it all and just blend that up. Refreshing as hell on a hot day and you will down a bottle of vodka before you know it. Must be OK with drinking pink foamy drinks.

Yeah, I've also had people put basil and sometime mint in but I think that just fucks it up. Sometimes simple is better and in this case I think so. If your melon isn't good and ripe maybe toss in a spoon of sugar, but the whole point is to drink tasty refreshing watermelon on a hot day. This does not require extra herbal additions. I feel like sometimes people just want to feel like they've done something so they can't just make it simple and leave well enough alone. I did think the mint was better than the basil if you must tamper.

Also...for the fall, I highly recommend to pour a hard apple cider and toss in a shot of spiced rum. Another super simple one that tastes just fine without additional tampering.

The thread in general or Todd's contribution right above your comment? I don't see why this is any less worthy of a thread than beer and I like the beer thread fine.

That you didn't capitalize this thread title but did for the wine thread.

also should be "New Nice" instead of "Nice New" on both

i just got this book. looking forward to trying out some recipes:

I had some authentic Chartreuse and soda about a year ago from a buddy who got some from his sister living in France. Looks pretty. Tastes good. 2 glasses. Shit hit me ten worse than my Gin reaction. Hallucinated and forgot what the hell happened and wanted to blow my head off the next morning. Of course, I had a bit of wine before but that threw me for a loop.

I'm lazy...so this one's easy and delicious:

Lemonade...any supermarket brand works fine
Absolut Berri Acai

Mix it as strong as you want, the Berri Acai is tasty and perfect complement to the lemonade. If you can't get the Berri Acai, the Raspberry works well too.

If you're ambitious, swap out the lemonade for your favorite "sour" ingredients.

Like I said, I'm lazy.

Add some sparkling water to this, or better yet, make it with Pelligrino Limonata.

I make the jalapeno simple syrup:

1 cup water
1 cup sugar

Bring all to a boil long enough for the sugar to dissolve. Cover, remove from heat and sit 30 min. Strain the peppers out. Then chill. It'll be good for a month in the fridge.

As for the bitters I just have used Angostura.

Also, just realized that I left out 1 ingredient from the recipe: 1/2oz lillet blanc. Fixed the original post.

Thanks for this. I'm going to have to try that. I'm going to also have to try making that Tavern on the Green using the jalapeno simple syrup.

Here's another I've been drinking a lot lately:

The Lion's Tail

2 ounces bourbon
1/2 ounce allspice dram
1/2 ounce lime juice
couple of dashes of angostura bitters
1 bar spoon of simple syrup

It's apparently a really old drink (20's or 30's) that dropped out of popularity at some point but has started coming back. Pretty tasty and much more lazy-friendly than the Four Aces.
