And one more note about the Coctails:
Mark Greenberg used to be the talent buyer at Lounge Ax and was one of the very few genuinely nice people I ever encountered in that position. He actually treated bands with respect. Great guy.

New record, "Stand By" came out in November '04. A 7 track ep of recent material they've been doing live. It's wonderful. The liner notes say Martin's taking the band in a "new direction" and wanted to record these songs before they embarked. A new full length album is promised soon.

Since "Sunburnt" in the mid-90's, they've released "Secret Box" (which is impossible to find, although I will own one some day) and "Sketchbook".

Yep. All those vinyl acts that never sold squat, were only around on labels like SST and Thirsty Ear for a short time, broke up and that was the end of it.

The Jazz Butcher had a solid 15 year run. Unfortunately, everything after the first two tracks of Condition Blue were pretty weak. Now, had you said Max Eider, I'd be in total agreement. "Best Kisser" is a lost gem.

Killdozer is eminently forgettable.

Awesome! Yeah, other than compilations their stuff can be hard to find....which I guess is why I brought them up in the first place.

Yeah, I meant that in response to the "hundreds of others" part.

Jazz Butcher had many great albums and Pat Fish remains one of my favorite funny twerps.

Killdozer were very bad-good. Fun drunk music. Well, not really music, more like incompetent howling.

This would have been my number one choice.

I'd like to add Exploding White Mice and Dancing Hoods (Mark Linkous' first band).

I used to kick off every show my first semester w/ "Graveyard Shift". I still dig out "12 Jealous Roses" every now and then. "Watching You Sleep" is a great rainy day song.

Saw 'em open for Iggy at the Ritz in '86.

Aces on Exploding White Mice as well.

Jawbox is forgotten?

Speaking of Jawbox, J Robbins has a new band called Channels. I picked up their ep last year after previewing one song online...turns out that song is the only good one on the ep. But man it's good.

Anyway, I think I would throw in Jejune. Araby is doing solo stuff now, that's more country/folk singer/songwriter music. She has an ep out, but it's only available in San Diego record stores or online, where it ends up being $15 after shipping. I'll have to pick it up next time I'm down there.

good call, but i always thought that their singles collection was better than any of their albums. and that guy's solo stuff didn't move me too much. that said, i was way, way into butterglory in high school. and does anyone still have that cibo matto/russel simmons (blues explosion variety) disc Butter 08? i've ben meaning to see if that's held up over the years.

I've got their Collateral Damage compilation and, I gotta say, that's a band that would've been best left in my memory.

Some great stuff has been mentioned already, but I'll add:

Greg Cartwright
Eric Ambel
Brad Jones

All three of those guys have been the linchpins of so many great bands and/or albums that it's almost inhuman.

I don't know if a lot of these are that "forgotten" - (archers, braniac, jawbox, et al)...

If forced to pick one that never comes up 'round here I'm going to go with The Van Pelt

So much love for Ted, but not much for his (arguably more talented) brother Chris...
