Showing my bias, but the covers of Jawbox's "Savory" and Duran Duran's "The Chauffer" are great.

Stone, I'll see your Dread Zeppelin and raise you a Me First and the Gimme Gimmes.

Along the ska-punk lines...

The first time I heard them cover "The Immigrant Song" I was a senior in college, a bit wasted and I literally peed my pants. Not figuratively, literally. One of my finest moments to date.

Never heard the whole thing, but the few things that I have heard are pretty great. Love the Britney Spears cover, in particular.

From this year:

The new release by the Slackers, which features ska versions of tracks by the Misfits, Stones, Box-Tops, T.Rex, and the Four Tops sitting uneasily beside "Like a Virgin" and Elton John's "I'm Still Standing". Not bad for this sort of thing, but I find a little ska goes a loooooooong way.

Diane Birch pays tribute to her '80s faves on this ep. Songs by Sisters of Mercy, Echo and the Bunnymen, Siouxsie and the Banshees, the Cure, Joy Division, Peter Murphy, and This Mortal Coil are given Birch's '70s Motown treatment, but still retain their oddly goth tones.

And this one doesn't meet the first post's criteria, but it's worth noting (and is pretty awesome):

Soul, funk, and R&B artists give a salute to Sticky Fingers. Given the Stones' roots, this isn't much of a stretch, although each artist manages to surprise with their take. Black Joe Lewis, Sharon Jones, Aloe Blacc, and Lee Fields are among the participants. The only disappointing track, to my ears, is the Sugarman 3's instrumental version of "Bitch" - I was really hoping for a barnburner on that one.

Been meaning to check out that Slackers. I enjoyed their Misfits cover when they played it live as well as the killer version of I'll Be There.

This is a thing:

Astrid Swan Hits (Pavement for Girls)

I really don't want to hear a handful of Pavement songs turned into fragile Lilith Fair fodder, but if anyone is curious here's the tracklist:

Cream Of Gold
Shady Lane
Gold Soundz
Box Elder
Major Leagues
Blue Hawaiian
Zurich Is Stained
Grounded
Here

I like TPC but this largely didn't work for me either. Kudos for the concept though.

Yeah, and they're both great.

Forgot about this one from 2011, although it's more a tribute album than covers collection:

The Riffing Cowboys consist of Jason Ringenberg, Warner Hodges, Dan Baird, and Eric "Roscoe" Ambel among a number of Canadian dudes, and with that line-up you pretty much know exactly what you're gonna get before you hear a note (ref. Jason and the Scorchers adrenalized version of "Lost Highway") and they deliver exactly that.

Huey Lewis & the News have two covers only albums, and inspired by this thread I'm listening to the first one for some reason. Kinda sounds like a mix between the band in Back to the Future and the best wedding band of all time. They are really earnest, well played and charming in their corny Huey way.

I give props for mostly unusual song choices, many of them songs I'd never heard of.

this does not count as a recommendation.

Does Emmylou Harris' Wrecking Ball count? I think it is mostly covers... and her rendition of Neil Young's "Wrecking Ball" is heart-crushing.

I suppose this technically counts but until recently she didn't write her own songs. So that's to me kind of a different thing. I like most of her albums a lot though so if this one counts, all but her last two probably would.

Gurf Morlix released an album of Blaze Foley covers early in the year. I haven't gotten around to hearing it but I've heard good things.

Joan as a Policewoman did an all covers album recently that was pretty good.

One that comes to mind that I'm surprised didn't get mentioned early is Elvis Costello's Almost Blue.

Some recent ones that I don't really endorse but probably have some fans here:

Matthew Sweet/Susanna Hoffs - Underneath the Covers 1 &2
Steve Earle - Townes
