These were on constant rotation on my Realistic portable cassette player that year.

Operation Ivy - Energy
No matter what you think of the movement that followed, this is a fuck-all album. Great songs and just... pure... energy.

So my least favorite period in music (post-1959, anyway) is probably 1986-1992. I think that 1989 might be one of the stronger years in that stretch, though, along with 1988 (which is really pretty great). For 1989 you've got stuff like Fugazi, Galaxie 500, The Cure, The Pixies, The Beastie Boys, and a few others mentioned that I really enjoy. I'm not a fan of the Stone Roses, though, and I don't like the XTC, Lou Reed, Can, or Neil Young albums from this year. But it was a good year overall.

Anyway, here's something I've just started listening to recently that I like a lot:

Bitch Magnet - Umber
This was recently reissued along with their other album Ben Hur and the Star Booty EP. It's basically right up my alley, early Steve Albini-type noise rock, a sort of precursor to math rock. Part of this band would go on to form the band Seam and I think Walt Mink. One of the guys may have played in Don Caballero. David Grubbs was in the band. It's good stuff.

One of my favourite V/A records. Amphetamine Reptile bands. U-Men, Cows, Halo of Flies, Tad.

Others that I have listed on RYM are Simply Saucer, Gibson Bros, my fav Opal record, Snivelling Shits, Chet Baker.

I really like this one, too:

It's a toss-up whether this is my favorite Bongwater album, or if it's The Power of Pussy. Whatever, this is a great little slab of weirdo psychedelic performance art. And their covers of The 13th Floor Elevators' "Splash 1" and Slapp Happy's "The Drum" are both inspired.

Pixies
Wedding Present
Stone Roses
The Cure
Michael Penn
Bob Mould
The Ocean Blue
JAMC
Robyn Hitchcock
Thelonious Monster
Grapes of Wrath
Lou Reed
Van Morrison
Guy Clark
Subdudes
Peter Murphy
The The
Scruffy the Cat
Chris Isaak

I'd add:

Camper Van Beethoven - Key Lime Pie
Boo Hewerdine & Darden Smith - Evidence
The Connells - Fun & Games
Fetchin Bones - Monster (although I'm not sure this would hold up)
Hunters & Collectors - Ghost Nation
Paul Kelly & the Messengers - So Much Water So Close to Home
Lenny Kravitz - Let Love Rule (I don't like anything he did but this but still like this)
Legaio Urbana - As Quatros Estacoes
Lonesome Strangers - S/T
Replacements - Don't Tell A Soul
The Wonder Stuff - Hup
The Lilac Time - Paradise Circus
Mark Lanegan - The Winding Sheet
Deacon Blue - When the World Knows Your Name

Back in the day this seemed like a fantastic year. I don't love a lot of it as much as i did then but it's still a pretty good year.
