I dipped a toe into 3 or 4 songs, and yeah, that's maybe the worst thing I've heard in a looooong time. Autotune and canned beats, behind all of which is a young, dumb girl playing "artist" and pretending she has something to say that's worth hearing.

She doesn't.

That Picadilly list has some interesting stuff on it. The other lists so far, not so much.

I also agree with Todd that the Fun. album was initially praised. Personally, I am too old to be able to get into a chorus of "we are young" without feeling silly, possibly one of my many character defects but I am fine with that.

I like the fun. album.

When it came out, it WAS the best album of the year. But it came out in mid-February and had no competition. What else were people going to write about? The 2011 year-end lists were all done, no summer tours for a while, and the album just seemed ripe for hype. 10.5 months of releases is a lot of opportunities for Some Nights to get pushed down the ladder.

I'm enjoying that Father John Misty album a lot more than I thought I would. In videos of live performances, the "punchable" factor is fairly high, but man that recording is great.

That's why I've avoided this so far. IS GOOD?

It is incredibly pretty, but not in as much of the way Grizzly Bear is/was. GB I found more atmospheric and spacey, mush less tied down to a good melody. This takes the "old country" knob and turns it up from 10% to like 35%, a move I enjoy. There are melodies in songs like "Nancy From Now On" and "This Is Sally Hatchet" that I could almost call hooks. The choruses are gorgeous, there's tons of harmony, and it doesn't plod or get lost looking at its own dick hole in the bathtub. It does, however, fit pretty well in as "cooings of a bearded mountain man," but in what I would say is a good way.

I liked 6 of the songs enough to dump them into my spotify playlist, and none have gotten kicked out so far. Check the 2 above, and if they do nothing for you, you're clear.

"The cooings of a bearded mountain man, now living in Laurel Canyon, sleeping with the painted ladies, writing a book, hangin' with the Shaman, and looking to abuse his lungs."

Who knew Mr Tillman had this type of storytelling ability.
This has 'surprisingly' worn well all year and will certainly be a Top 5'r.

Both of those are pretty songs but the best part about that album is how eclectic it is. Like, listening to those songs wouldn't prepare you for "Hollywood Forever Cemetary Sings" which, is my fave on that album. Just love the slow incessant reverbed out drum beat and that cheaply distorted guitar.

I dismissed that record when I got it (doesn't help that the first song is the sleepy "babylon" song) but I kept coming back to it because I'd notice something new about it each time.

While I dig both song & video of 'Hollywood Forever Cemetery' w/Aubrey Plaza, the song is an anomaly compared to the rest of the record in just about every possible way.

Listening now and, to me, it sounds a lot like Bonnie Prince Billy as played by My Morning Jacket.

It's the reverb.

Yeah, see I live in a sometimes social vacuum because we don't have cable, so I was completely devoid of knowing that piece of information.

Well, FYI, one of the girls is from Elkview, West Virginia. She's now 19, divorced with 2 kids, and working on a 3rd with a different dude. Cheated on her husband the week before their wedding. Most of the dudes in her story arc wear WVU hats.

I'd like to formally apologize to everyone for the above post.

Haha. Yeah, Elkview is out towards Charleston...and is not a great place in the state. Unfortunately, her statistics don't vary much from what is the norm there. Lemme guess, they were camo WVU hats?
