Should we ditch "Anything Goes"?

is the real problem that having the forum implies that it's condoned, or that Andrew, from a cursory glance, is posting these images?

edit: ya know what, forget what i said.

keep the forum.

the forum didn't get Cap'n fired, he got himself fired by messing around with someone like that. his work probably would never even have known this place existed if it wasn't for him fucking with that guy. it was his fault, not the forums. harsh words, but it's the truth.

if you're worried about getting fired, watch what you post.

Personally, though, I think we're overstating the importance of the NSFW section in getting Cap'n in trouble. I'd hazard a guess that he would have been fired either way. 700+ posts from work and putting your employer in an awkward situation with a client, customer, affiliate or whatever that guy's firm was are sufficient grounds for being fired in my view. You guys are all taking risks with the amount of time you spend here while at work and any work-related posts are especially risky. Just don't kid yourself about that.

I agree 100%.

I see your point, Cory, but I disagree that the stuff's necessarily going to get posted anyway. I think it's established that dead babies and herpes aren't appropriate for rock/pop, and i don't think anyone's urge to post them will necessarily overflow here if the NSFW forum is gone. If someone's boss was doing some routine checking of the sites an employee (who was allowed to view non-work-related content, as many are) was visiting and came across obner, then the presence of "Anything Goes" and its content could very strongly color that visitor's impression of the general merit/content of this site. More or less what billy and katie said. I don't really understand why you so adamantly contest that everyone should expect this site to have that kind of content - we have many other tacit and explicit understandings, and non-posting of certain kinds of graphic images can certainly be reenforced.

I am one of the few who voted no......and my reasoning is at least we have a place to put it now when people post something like that - I feel bad for the Cap'n but it is horribly ironic that they used a section of the site plainly labeled "NOT SAFE FOR WORK" against him.

I'm not. I don't think we need it by merit of the fact that it never gets used. But to think that this will solve anything is foolish. EDIT: That is not to discredit your very true comment that the presence of that particular forum would color the view of an outside observer. That is very true.

Offensiveness is in the eyes of the beholder, and Cotton made a similar post. It's not just dead babies, but also Eliza Dushku or Salma Hayek posts or even "FUCK" or "SHIT" in subject headers. Any of those could get you reprimanded if they caught the wrong person's attention at work.

I'm not advocating a merger between Obner and Ogrish, no way. But there will always be plenty of room for an employer to use your misuse of company time against you if they want to. The "you guys got me in trouble at work" thing don't work for me. Ever.

But what about those employers who aren't looking for an excuse, but do check up? Isn't it likely that someone would be more likely to be alarmed by pornographic content than eliza dushku sucking a lollypop?

seriously Haq. Just get rid of the silly thing. the argument "it might not make things any better" is simply not serious enough to negate the action.

maybe we can all come to an agreement that that forum should be used for links, but not actual photos posted in threads.

that would solve the problem.

For now, the forum is only visible to registered, logged-in users. Is that enough?

Elvis,

I see what you're saying. I work for myself much of the time from home, but I take on consulting assignments that sometimes last several months at time and require me to work on location. Whenever, I'm on location, I wouldn't dream of coming here. Frankly I wouldn't go anywhere on the internet that wasn't as reliably safe as CNN and would keep all non-work related surfing to a minimum because I care about the possible perception any non-work related surfing could cause if monitored.

So yes, I see that People magazine type content could be risky in some cases, but Hustler is quite obviously more risky. And the fact that People could get some into trouble doesn't mean that we shouldn't all be able to agree to ban hustler if there's general agreement that people don't want it here.

IMO, this is how the entire site should be.

why isn't it?

Because some potential new posters might be put off by not being able to check out what the site's about without going through the registration process (as minimal as it is).

2 things right here and now goddammit:

1. I didn't post 700 times from work. It was more like 60/40, and a shitload of those were while I was at lunch. I'm stupid, but not retarded.
2. I didn't "fuck" with that guy. Say that again and we're gonna be enemies. Seriously. I didn't like an image from his site, and didn't know (obviously) that he could ever find out about my opinion by me hotlinking it. You learned that lesson without ever getting fired. Congratufuckinglations. I didn't. I understand that you tend to "fuck" with people, because it's your nature. I don't. I'm sarcastic, yes, but not spiteful. It was never my intention to debate anything with that guy, nor to get a rise out of him. Don't transpose your personality on me.

This site has a fighting chance of being defended against a reasonable employer's inquiry without a section devoted to things no one should view at work.

oh really? i don't believe i've ever personally attacked anyone on this site. made smart ass comments, yes, but that's as far as the "fucking with them" goes. i don't attack anything they've done, or their lifestyle, or their beliefs ['cept if they don't like bloc party].

look man, don't get pissed at me 'cause i'm not kissing your ass about this.
