is great because:
a) they are SO fucking tight and energetic
b) you get to hear a couple of their old songs done with the current singer
c) it just is

Yay! This is still one of my favorites . . . maybe it IS my favorite, actually.

Here's what I want in a live album:

1. Excellent sound quality, but it has to be raw and honest

2. I want to hear banter (if there is any) and screw-ups (if there are any.) No cleaning that crap up other than EQ and taking out excessively long portions where it's just the crowd.

3. NO GUEST ARTISTS! I want a "normal" show - not those goddamned stupid, annoying things where every artist the band has mentioned liking shows up to sing on this song or that song or whatever. Save that crap for fan-club releases and the like.

4. Don't edit! I want the WHOLE show. And if you put out a DVD, put that show out on CD, too. I don't often have time to watch, but I WILL listen.

Good live albums for me generally need to start with a few things

1. The songs were cool in their studio form
2. The songs live are either fairly close to the studio form or wildly different
3. Regardless of whether the band is super tight or raggedly tight, they sound muscular and confident
4. The drum sounds HAVE to be right.
5. The vocals ought to be up front in the mix.
6. Mistakes are better than obvious studio edits. It's best when it's just a mix and a mastering job.

I love a great live album. Some of my faves:

Peter Gabriel - Secret World Tour Live
Sonia Dada - Lay Down and Love It Live
Erykah Badu - Live
The Roots - The Roots Come Alive
The Beatles - Live at The Hollywood Bowl
Duncan Sheik - Live at the Reservoir
Portishead - PNYC
Peter Mulvey - Glencree
Otis Redding - Live in Europe
Led Zeppelin - How The West Was Won
Martin Sexton - Live Wide Open
The Band - The Last Waltz

O.k. that's enough for now.

Generally not a fan of Live albums, with a couple of exceptions...

No idea what makes a good live album, generally I have to be a HUGE fan of the band, though in Hendrix's case I'm just a very casual fan.
