Not with the Chunnel, bitchez. Msr Frew can now take a bus all the way from Edinburgh to Rome.

He will stink afterward, though.

But, yeah....

True, but a bus? Yeesh, talk about torture. Maybe a train.

I usually take the bus to London if I'm ever down there and that is the very limit of my 'coach endurance'. I'm a strapping big lad and 9 hours of hunching, crushed legs and potential deep vein thrombosis is about all I can take.

I'd rather walk to Rome which I may have to do since I have (as Aural mentioned) an acute fear of flying. That or just get drunk at the airport bar.

The Cinque Terra is really beautiful.

I loved just wandering in Venice.

The Tuscan countryside is amazing. San Giminango (sp?) is a nice daytrip. Sienna is nice, too.

I hope to go back to Italy within the next year or two.

ok, trip report:

everything was great. went to Venice, then into Tuscany and Umbria (Florence, Assisi, Perugia), then down to Sorrento/Capri area on the coast south of Naples, Pompei, then over to Rome.

Everything was great, had good weather every day except one rainy day in Florence. Saw a lot of art and a lot of churches. Drank a hell of a lot of good wine and ate a lot of good food. Probably walked about 100 miles.

Trip negatives: the grafitti problems in Italy, they really need to ban spray paint, trying to figure out the water bus system in Venice while drunk, and the crazy-ass drivers - saw, within the span of about 1 hour, 2 scooters crashes and one guy dead on the street. They really care very little about lanes or stopping.

awesome!!...looks like you had a great trip

are there always that many people in St Peter's?...doesn't seem like it could be a functioning cathedral with that much traffic coming through there...do they close it to the public during services or something?

i think they shut it down from time to time to allow services - in a lot of the churches they are having services in the side chapels while people are coming in and out, however. A big cathedral like this has probably like 10 side chapels.

Who needs to fly when you have buses and rails?

Heh.

So, I've got two weeks free. My parents are going to be in Italy for the first of my two. I have two options the way I look at it:

1. Fly into Italy and focus all of my time on it. Spend a few days putting it on blast first class style with my parents, and then off on my own (which I've never done before).

2. Fly into Paris for $1000 cheaper, spend 2-3 days there with friends, train to Italy, spend a week or so there, train back to France, or arrange to fly out of Italy?

Option 2 seems a little too whirlwind for me, but perhaps I could swing it. I've never traveled before, so your insight is appreciated. Especially those of you who have been to both countries and know that splitting two weeks between them is silly.

I would not split the time - 2 weeks is really only enough to see a few parts of Italy. I saw a lot on my trip but it was fairly hectic.
