re: their 80's hits versus their 70's drunkboy rambles:

Stuff like "No Anchovies Please" and "Ain't Nothin' But A Houseparty" and "Give It To Me" are far more fun than later things like "Freeze Frame"

"That Bowling ball! She's my wife!"

And middle songs like "Do I Do" are a decent combo of the two styles

I'm sure all their stuff isn't as bad as those albums, but are you saying that you haven't to have heard all of a band's work to have an opinion about them? If so, I highly disagree.

But you're judging them on arguably their worst two albums.

Look I'm not claiming to be an expert on J. Geils and I'm not "judging them" except in the sense that we all judge bands based on a sample of their work and decide whether or not we deem them worthy of further exploration.

I don't doubt for a minute that these albums are near the bottom of their collection but I'd have to hear a kernel of potential from them to think that their earlier material was worth my time. For example, I'm not a fan at all of disco era Bee Gees, but wasn't shocked to find they they were capable of a grand orchestral pop album like Odessa cause they do have good voices. I don't hear anything in the J. Geils music I've heard to think that they'd be capable of producing a great album.

Maybe J. Geils put out some music Todd would like, but I don't think I was making an outrageous statement/pre-judgement to say that his money would be better spent on something else. For example, as much as Todd claims to like Tom Ze, Cesaria Evoria, and Caetano Veloso, I don't think he owns much by them.

np: Mandrill "Fencewalk"

yes, but knowing how DAMN much Todd likes the Kings of Leon, I think he would find a lot he'd like in early 70s Geils.

I'm one of those dudes who doesn't need to have every album he owns or listens to be "great." Sometimes I just go for "fun."

"Great" is for other times. If you're serious 24/7, well that's a hell of a lot of serious.

Ha Ha I remember thinking why is todd wasting his money on that Kings of Leon when there's so much other stuff he claims to like but isn't buying that I think is much better. But he seems to love that cd so maybe I should just shut up on this topic.

Great doesn't necessarily mean serious. I'd argue for example that Devo and B-52's put out some great albums and they didn't put out any serious ones.

Was just meant to mean better than merely "good". I mean there are tons of "good" albums and no one can afford to own and/or store every "good" album. Whenever I buy something, I hope to think its better than merely "good." "Good" gets lost quickly in my collection.

This is true.
And God Bless ya for waving the International Musical flag, but the way I sees it, good music is good music and I want it ALL! Therefore, I do tend to gravitate toward buying music from artists that are not yet represented in my collection, rather than going the completeist route.

Therefore, I'm a looking for opinions on J. Giles.

That said, I have been looking for Zé's Fabrication Defect album, to no avail. :(

For Gawd's sake...the band had a dude in it named Magic Dick.

Right there that puts them on a level that surpasses 70 % of the stuff that's discussed in dah obnah.

Not as high on A-Ha Shake... as I was on the first one.
