i've read comparisons of "ethan" to pavement, belle & sebastian and the kinks. does this sound about right?

We also get a lot of Ben Folds comparisons, for some reason. I think it's the piano-heavy nature of several of the arrangements and the fact that I tend to slip into and out of falsetto on occasion.

I hope you get the disc. I'm pretty proud of it and I know that Matt is, too.

TBS - Former main songwriter of The Field Mice. RIYL: Sarah Records, Belle and Sebastian, OMD... It's good and melancholy...

I like the new Ted Leo better than "Hearts of Oak", but not as much as "Tyrrany"...songs are a bit more simple, owing to the new 3 member lineup, and sound a lot more like Chisel... but, then again, Ted Leo is Ted Leo - he's not going to sound as signifigantly different as some people might...

looks like i'll have enough $ in the current 2week budget after my indie store stop (assuming vetiver & autolux are still there) for this. i've liked what i've read about it, and have been thinking about it since the cmj bb days.

Autolux - Future Perfect

RIYL- Sonic Youth; the older, dreamy side of Smashing Pumpkins (i.e. Gish & Siamese Dream)

Lots of dreamy melodies intertwined with heavily distorted guitars & bass. The songs have a hazy, come-down feel while still frequently rocking. This makes no sense, but it's my favorite record this year.

I second this. A friend of mine sent me some of their demos. Nice and dreamy without being too sweet.

So far this year my fav purchases have been ones that are all too predictable of me to like:

Joseph Arthur-Yeah it's a bit more produced then others but it's damn damn fine

Ed Harcourt-Only have it online via Tony but it's an incredible album and better then the last

Kevin Tihista-Very lush. Brings thoughts of Sgt. Peppers to mind in melodies and orchestral arrangements. He scores a home run with this one.

Drive By truckers Dirty South- DAMN fine album. Made me a fan.

Technically, isn't old you music you haven't heard yet also new music?

well, i found vetiver at the indie store but autolux wasn't to be found, so i'll patrol the online sites for a good price. only $8 left in this 2wk music budget, so probably only 1 cd left thru next thursday. :P But $113 left overall. (Gonna put the wilco book on my xmas wish list.)

still skimming through recommendations in this thread. helio sequence sounds like 00s college rock -- anything in particular? and what does Viva Voce sound like?

Viva Voce sounds like a mix between The Flaming Lips, Yo La Tengo's nondistorted stuff, and maybe some AIR (a la Talkie Walkie). It's pretty basic guitar-driven indie pop with some electronic elements thrown. It's got some really addicting hooks... I think you'd really like the album from what I've gathered from your music tastes. It's looking like a top 5 album in 2004 for me the more I listen to it.

Scroll down and give it a listen. Also, throw The New Pornographers in the RIYL.

Cool. I think you'll like it. If you don't, then you can crucify me on this board.

Jerry Springer: The Opera (award-winning West End musical that is absolutely hilarious)
Nellie McKay - Get Away From Me (20-year-old piano player, guess it's a "pop" record but all over the place stylisticaly)
Brad Mehldau - Anything Goes (jazz piano trio doing some great covers, including Radiohead)
